Well if you use the same password for OS X as for your mail accounts, it's transmitted over the network in clear text every time you check your mail, so.....

Using the same PW for lots of things, especially PW's stored on remote servers such as email accounts is a big fat, juicy security no-no.

Most security breaches result from bad habits, not the software.
