since 10.2.8 my ibook (700mhz 2002 w/ 640mb ram) has been losing audio input and output on a random basis. i don't get any audio output from the finder, quicktime, sound studio... nothing!

if i go to system prefs, everything looks normal, however i don't get any audio input showing up from the internal microphone. it's like the whole damn audio controller is screwed up.

i even tried plugging in headphones in case it was the internal speakers causing the problem. no luck.

but if i restart i get the "bong!" sound... so i know it's not hardware related. and if i restart enough times (usually 2 or 3) the audio eventually returns for a while...

has anyone else experienced this?

oh and btw i don't have any audio extensions or drivers installed (like audio hijack)... i don't know what could be causing this. i have run disk first aid and repaired permissions. called the applecare, and they were stumped too.

ideas?

So, they won't replace/fix it then either?

well they told me if the problem didn't correct itself to call again. i thought it was fixed when i restarted 3 or 4 times the audio came back... this was last wednesday... but then yesterday, i had no audio again.

applecare also said if it doesn't work, i should reinstall 10.2 and then update to 10.2.6 and see if that fixes it. i might just do this, but it's such a pain in the ass... *sigh*

i guess if reinstalling to 10.2.6 doesn't do it they will have to do a motherboard replacement (for the second time!). but like i said i think it's software related as 10.2.8 included updated audio drivers, plus i still get the bong sound when restarting.

i figured out i can usually get my audio back by putting the ibook to sleep (closing the lid) and opening it again.

weird.
