Hi all,
I have a bunch of files that have filenames that I am assuming are Shift-JIS (Japanese.) The filenames basically come up as a bunch of random western-european type characters in the Finder or in ID3 tags in iTunes.
Does anyone know of a way to be able to use these filenames in OS X? I know you can use Shift-JIS in Safari, but I can't find out how to use it anywhere else. I might be able to find an answer on a website somewhere that is written in Japanese, but my nihongo isn't good enough for that.

You could try doing it one by one using TextEdit or BBEdit. Both have the ability to change the text encoding. BBEdit does it more on the fly which might make it easier on you.

OK, tonight I got a chance to try out all this stuff. The filename conversion utility worked great, thanks for that! I'm still having problems with the ID3 tags though.
The only way I can see to get to the text in the ID3 tags is clipboarding it out of iTunes. When I tried setting the encoding in BBEdit to Shift-JIS and pasting it, then setting encoding to Unicode, nothing happened. Not sure if I am doing something wrong, or iTunes/the clipboard is mangling the text in some way that it isn't correct anymore.
I'm beginning to think that I am going to have to write a little program to do this for me. I notice there are APIs to convert all this stuff for me if I can get the text, but I have never worked with ID3 tags directly before. Guess I have a project for this weekend...

I think I might have found my solution. I downloaded ID3EDS and it seems to have the ability to batch convert ID3 tags to Unicode (amongst other things.) I haven't got that to work, but I was able to copy things manually out of it and into iTunes, which for the 30 or so tracks I have with this problem should be doable.

I didn't notice your ID3 tag problem before.
I guess I've always just retyped them rather then try to convert.
Either way, good luck.
