Say, your computer purchase is within the 10 day period and Panther comes out and is installed on the new computers. Will they upgrade you for free or would it be better to send the computer back and ask for an exchange????

Nobody knows until it's officially announced by Apple...at that time, they'll set the plan of action on how things will go....

Perhaps you should ask Apple?

They'll probably offer half-assed "update only" Panther CDs for $20 shipping and handling, like with Jaguar.

my computer didn't come with iLife, so i sent in the 20$ Up To Date thing.

the ended up sending me the up-to-date cd, then calling me and saying that my computer was SUPPOSED to come with installed, so they would refund the up-to-date shipping cost, AND send me a new copy.

whatever.

If you wanted Panther for free then maybe you should have waited on your computer purchase?

If I buy a Powerbook today, will I get 10.4 for free when it's released?

Personally I didn't want to wait another month or 2 on getting a $7500 computer to save $200 on 10.3.

Exactly - they'll give you a free upgrade if you buy your computer AFTER THE NEW SOFTWARE IS RELEASED, but because you've bought stock that was actually produced before then, and has just been hanging around in the distribution channel for a while, it's not installed on your machine.

If you buy it the day before the release date, even if the product has been announced, tough titty. (Quite rightly)
