I've just ordered an iMac 1.25GHz with a 160Gb HD. I'd likec to use this machine as the startup volume as my current iMac (15" 800MHz) boots from an external firewire drive. I'd like to save everything personal including keychain stuff, broadband log-in, etc. onto the new machine's internal HD.

What files must I put where to make the new machine startup exactly like this one?

I asked Apple's helpline and they just said move the preferences folder contents - surely there is more to it than that??

Thanks

Peter

Boot your new mac to into target disk mode (hold T key at startup).

Connect it to your current mac with a firewire cable.

Clone your current Mac's HD to your new mac's HD using Carbon Copy Cloner. Mac sure you choose to erase the HD on the new Mac in the cloner's prefs.

Now boot you new mac to it's copy of the Mac OSX install CDs and install OSX easy install (so you get 10.2.7 on the drive),

Reboot and you done.

Thanks for that. But, is it really that simple? Bear in mind that my current system is 10.2.8 (I don't think I've had the problems experienced by others - yet )

All system stuff is on external firewire, so is it just a matter of linking the drives to the new machine and cloning the startup partition to the new Mac?
