Panther is coming and I want to buy it, while expose is cool I need more. I don't have .mac either because I can't run scripts or mysql so the sync feature doesn't help.
I would probably buy the family pack version for these machines:
A g4 iMac 800 geforce 2mx
A 700mhz emac geforce 2mx
A 600mhz iBook no quartz xtreme
A 400mhz bronze powerbook
I'll start the list
1) Faxing- I'd probably use this.
2) iChat- (only if I get iSight, but it will probably happen)
3) Expose- not enough by itself for an upgrade, but cool.

Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Here's a list. It's based on what I've found to be useful over the past few weeks:
1. Fast user switching
2. Font handling
3. Mail
4. Finder, open & save dialog boxes
5. Exposé
6. Printing (speed & control) and faxing
7. Keyboard Shortcuts (being able to set the key for any menu option, even services)
8. Better utilities (activity monitor, terminal, console)
9. Journaling (now enabled automatically on startup disk)
10. Unixy stuff and dev tools
Sure, it's easy to say that none of these are really important - compared to (say) dvd playback but they're the kind of things that are useful and stay useful, and will make 10.3 a worthwhile purchase on any computer that's capable of running it <looks at elderly pb233, sighs>. Of these, only fast user switching should always have been there from 10.0 and the only glaring omission now is x11 style remote logins.

XCode. That's enough.
But Expose, a more responsive Finder and OS and improved mail filtering won't be bad either.
Now, if only I could get get a discount for all these brushed metal applications, whose looks I hate, I would be consumately happy.

Does he use Windows?
95->98->ME->*cackle*->2k->WinXP->Longhorn... Oh wait... That won't be out until 2005.
I'd rather have a complete OS update every year and a half rather than be stuck on MicroSoft's release cycle.

10. Oppurtunity to brag on this Forum
9. To get rid of that retro Jaguar motif
8. To allow Apple to brag about it's increasing user base
7. To mesmerise your PC friends with Exposé
6. To pretend it's Snappier™
5. FileVault to secure your Porn
4. iDisk, to allow Apple to brag about it's increasing user base
3. Font Book to realise how many fonts you really don't need
2. Pixlet, to brag about something only 1% of users will really use.
1. iChat, to allow Apple to brag about it's increasing user base
Fast User Switching could also be a good feature, but seeing how many Macs you own, I suggest an office chair with good wheels instead.

Heh
But I really wonder how big the need for fast user switching really is ... seems some people intend to use that feature more than anything else.

Metal Finder. You know you want to touch it... feel it... caress it. BUT NOT TOO MUCH!!! it can cut you, will cut you, if you're not careful. Be wary of it's presence. That is all.

because to go a year without panther once apple announces their big iApp is really frustrating. Trust me I did it with Jaguar and now I have it on my iBook and am loving iCal, iChat, iMovie 3, Safari, the new Mail etc. Apple will come out with probably 3 or more killer new apps that are only avalible with panther. If you wanna use em you'll have to buy so why not buy now.

I thought I was the only closet OS X nerd...
Trying to downplay the unsightly $129 bill on my CC, purposely dressing up a bit to look less nerdy when going to the Apple Store, trying to hide my excitement when walking into the store, holding back the urge to pull out my digital camera, refraining from wearing my old OS X T-shirt...
My girlfriend knows about my addiction... she was very proud that I walked into the store, picked up the 10.2 box, purchased it (without tacking on a some random piece of software) and walked away...

If you need other people to convince you with ten reasons... then you don't need it.
If you want it... buy it...!
If you don't want it... DON'T buy it...!
Pretty straight-forward to me.

I have suspended belief in the Chiefs until after this game. Call me a fair weather fan, most of us from KC are. First three games were easy, last week was a little tougher, a win against the Broncos will convince me. Oh, and I sell Macs, so of course I'll have Panther

I'll probably use fast user switching every single day.
Once you start finding full quality versions of Pixar films on BitTorrent, you'll wish you had the pixlet codec. Just kidding about that one. I don't even know what BitTorrent is.
X11 is going to be cool, if I can ever figure out why I would need to run Linux for anything.
I'd say use it for 10 minutes (like maybe at the apple store). You'll have your 10 reasons.

I think you give your roommate too much respect. I don't see the big deal, infact I like getting new versions of OS X every year. You pay about half as much for an OS X upgrade as he does for a Windows upgrade, but get yours about twice as often. So it pretty much evens out.
Not to mention the fact that OS X upgrades actually contain these things:
1)Real, new features.
2)Speed Enchancements
3)Newer, better versions of iApps
With Panther we get new features like Expose, while they get new features like...worms that can take complete control over their computer.
We get an improved tweaked interface of an already good looking interface, while they get an interface that was inspired from Fisher Price.
We get more speed on the same hardware, while they have to upgrade their CPU, RAM and Graphics card to get the same level of performance they had before.
We get iApps which get better and better and are constantly improving. While they get stagnant releases that have nothing more than updated looks to go with the OS. When was the last time they really updated IE, Outlook Express, or things like Notepad, Calculator etc?
I would just wait, sooner or later your roommate will get bit for using Windows and you can laugh at him while working away on Panther.
If it's one thing i know its that Windows users ALWAYS get punished for using windows. At work we had a client bring in their computer to get fixed because the $5 power supply on their dell blew, and his `18 year old son came with him. His son promptly started laughing at my iBook. For no reason other than "it's an Apple", i let it go, and before they left he made some sideway comment about how great his Win98 PC had been and had never had a problem.
Well a few months after that his son came in to pay a bill and mentioned to me that he might have to bring his computer to us(the one using the bullet-proof Win98) it seems that now that 90% of the time he boots up his computer it BSOD's on him immediately when windows loads. He claims to have installed no new hardware or software on it and it isnt even connected to the internet. I guess he's not so high and mighty now.

I'm most looking forward to the Mail and Preview updates, actually. I also want to try out the new Finder, but that's a sort of "use it then judge it" kind of thing. Any performance updates, polished GUI elements, etc. are always welcome, too. With my edu discount, I'll get Panther for about half price, so it will definitely be worth the upgrade. As a matter of fact, there should be plenty of rebates and deals available, so most people shouldn't end up paying the full $129, anyway, which makes the purchasing decision much easier.
Oh, and Dante Hall is, officially, the MAN!

It feels much faster. I tried it on my friend's 600mhz iBook. This is not a mean machine by any stretch of the imagination. Things just were fast. Menus, previews, stuff like that.
The icons zoom when you double click them. Thats pretty cool.
And Expose really is awesome. Really awesome. Some apps need help, like, you can't grab a jpg out of Safari, and drop it into Entourage. I hope you can do from safari to photoshop. I think Expose will improve apps' workflow in that developers will want their apps to be able to do things like that. Drag straight from one app to another. It already works from finder. More apps need to do this.
Do you have many fonts? I think I'm going to get a lot more into font collecting. Gotta figure out how to fund it though. .
