Holy Crap Batman! As reported by the System Profiler, my machine now says the system version is Mac OS X Server 10.2.8 (6R73) [Mac OS X 10.2.8 (6R73) ].

[Edit]: This machine never had OS X Server on it until the 6R73 update was run. I wonder if the Software Update grabbed the wrong installer or something else is amiss here? I wouldn't expect OS X to be "upgraded" to X Server like this.

Background: I'm running a Dual 450 and installed 10.2.8 when it first came out (before I read this board). I didn't have the networking problems others had with their DP machines maybe since I connect to a router rather than direct to my DSL modem.

Tonight I see that 10.2.8 (6R73) is availble. Being bold (or crazy) I use Software Update to update my system. I don't know if it's related or not but the machine KP'd just as the install/optimization was completing. I press the reset button and it was a very long, anxious wait before the machine came back. It did though but my familiar login screen was replaced with the OS X Server. Also the boot sequence was different as drives startup messages/status bars were displayed, etc... Never saw those before and might be something specific to OS X Server.

So now I really don't know where I am. If this is a good install (due to the KP earlier) or what.

Maybe I will do a clean install when Panther comes out. I WILL NOT be updating my new 17" PowerBook. It's staying at 10.2.6 until 10.3 is ready.

I'm also missing some stuff. Don't know if this is due to Server or what. For instance under the Accounts pane in System Preferences there is a tab for Login Options. This used to have two radio buttons to choose whether to Display the login window as "Name and password" or as "List of Users" in addition to two checkboxes. My "updated" OS now only has the two checkboxes, I'm missing the radio button options. Everytime I login, now, I need to type my user name. I don't have it set to auto login nor do I want to set it to do this.

Also in the Sharing pane I only have a Services tab. I'm missing the Firewall and Internet tabs.

Does anyone know if these missing tabs are expected in OS X Server or am I hosed?

Thanks,
Todd

Creating a certain file somewhere on the system makes OS X think it's the Server version; removing the same file makes it default to Client.

You could just delete that file. I can't remember what it is...

Is it possible you downloaded the wrong updater? Why it would install would be a whole nother issue...

I'd just re-run the 500k updater. If it doesn't show up in software update just grab it from apple's support site.

Did that last night. Still the same thing. This blows. Would it be as simple as a file somewhere which tells the OS to boot in server mode vs client as cipher13 suggested?

Why not try downloading the combined updater and see if that helps?

No, it's not. Cuz it won't come with 10.2.6, it'll come with 10.2.7, which has the same battery-life bug as 10.2.8 (6R65). Besides, what you experienced is definitely an anomaly, no doubt caused by the kernel panic.

I've updated several machines (one from 10.2.6 -> 10.2.8 [6R73], the other from 10.2.8 [6R65] -> 10.2.8 [6R73]) without incident.

tooki,

My PB came with 10.2.4 (bought one week before the new models were intro'd in Paris).

I'll try the full combo installer and see what that does.

Can you try and remember? I'd like to try this.

Just because.

I did a fresh install of 10.2 (using Archive and Install) then ran the 10.2.8 Combo Installer and all is well again.

If the file /System/Library/CoreServices/ServerVersion.plist exists, then the OS thinks it's OS X Server.

That's the one.

If that file exists, (re)move it.
