I travel frequently with my iBook. On a recent long trip to Turkey, I was able to hook up at most internet cafes and see the net with DHCP simply assinging me an IP.

A few cafes in more remote areas have only a single IP that is shared among several Windows machines. In these places, OS X created a "self-assigned" IP which obviously did not work and I couldn't see the net.

Is there any way to have OS X work with a Windows network where are the 'puters are sharing the same IP?

Thanks,

Trygve

Computers on the same local network cannot share an IP. What I suggest you do, if you can, is to go into the network setings of a windows computer there and see how it is set up, and set up your mac accordingly.

What I am assuming is that the computers are behind a NAT that is not using a DHCP server, therefore the IP addresses have to be entered manually into the network settings.

I am not sure how it does it, but the local machines in quite a few Turkish internet cafes are sharing one IP - it could be that the master machine is doing something not unlike how OS X can allow a shared connection via AirPort.

Trouble is, it seems to be a MS thing as it won't assign the iBook a proper address. It is not DHCP in any case.

Reading the settings is a bit difficult as it is all in Turkish.
