I have a G4 imac 800MHZ and the first version of 10.2.8 did not cause any problems but Safari and the overall system did seem a tad slower. I also installed the re-release of 10.2.8 which for my machine was about 0.5Mbytes. This last one did seem to speed things up a bit. So one step back and one step forward -I'm freaking back were I started.
Can't wait till Panther is on the shelves!

I installed the original 10.2.8 on my iBook with no issues other than the battery life calculation. The new update fixed that, and the G5 update is fine. 10.2.8 had some issues, but they weren't huge and didn't seem to have bothered most people. Does anyone remember the scripting error that took out some users' partitions in the iTunes 2 installer? Now that caused some problems for the few who got nailed by it!

Nope. Still got a G4 QuickSilver 867 MHz. I won't get a G5 at least until December/January.
Still running 10.2.8 6R73. I'll buy Panther when it comes out.

I'll be happy if I can afford a used G4 by that time...

I'm even worse off - I've got an iBook running 10.2.4. What's really bad is that this one has been affected with .4's modem bug (kernal panic after waking up unless I'm careful), and .4's battery bug (eating away at my battery)... unfortunately, I can't upgrade, because I have a ridiculously slow dialup line (I would just leave it on for a day or two if need be, but my ISP disconnects me after a couple hours. And, if you're wondering how I even got to .4 in the first place, I was at a friend's house who has cable, so I downloaded it from there).
So, yeah.

My home computer is an old 400 MHz iMac with 10.1.5. Never did get around to upgrading it.
Of course, I've got a nice dual-gig with 10.2.6 at work, so I really don't have anything to complain about.
By the way, Sage, why don't you try using a download-resume program?

If you really want to update, Apple sells CDs on their website that updates to 10.2.5 for $20. Perhaps soon they'll have a 10.2.8 CD out, and you can pay that fee and update.

Well, I figured that at this point my battery is so eaten up that it'll be easiest for me to just wait for Panther to come out and buy another battery at the same time (and having a nearly dead battery is actually fairly useful, because I'll just keep it in my iBook while I'm using it as a desktop so that my brand-spanking-new one stays nice and fresh for road trips ).

I'm sort of bugged to see how much of the community is involved in piracy. Intending to buy is different than actually buying.
I intend to buy panther the day it comes in, but that doesn't mean I feel like I can steal it.
My work is getting me a G5 though. 1.6 ( )

I am running 10.2.8 on my 4 machines with no problem. The last 100 MB combo update installed perfectly and seems to give a speed boost as well.
I really see no problem with people using the pre-release of panther. It is out there. Most people here will BUY panther - no doubt.

Yes, I know I could buy a PC, but why?

Good intentions don't make it any less illegal to pirate software. If Apple wanted them to have the Panther Beta, Apple would give it to them. But we've talked about that a hundred times before...

A few things...
A) I have yet to see Panther in action. by all accounts, it's going to be amazing, but that's what everyone said about Jaguar. it was cool, but was disappointed by all the reports of amazing speed and super features.
B) I'm going to have to live with my 733MHz Quicksilver for at least another year. My girlfriend would kill me if I upgraded any time soon. I would also like to save up and get a nice dual G5 2.5 GHz when they come out...
C) Who isn't going to buy Panther? I'm sure a few people won't, but those people wouldn't buy it if the OS was $20...
D) I can understand why some people are getting upset with the whole $129 per year OS cycle... to be honest, I'm tired of the rapid change because so many users are having difficulties keeping up. I'm tired of re-teaching people...

For many people, the legality of an action doesn't really factor in as long as they aren't likely to get in trouble for violating the law. If they don't see anything morally wrong with the action, they're not going to feel guilty for doing it.

I have Jaguar on a G4.. admittedly, I have Panther (and Gentoo) on my iBook, but I've actually got it legally. I'm even allowed to tell you that! Probably not anything else, though.

I have zero problems with people using a pre-release Panther. As long as they don't expect support or compensation for possible damage to their computer, that is. I am personally not using it, haven't even seen it in action! (save for a few screenshots online). I will definitely be buying it, and I probably would have downloaded it if not for my slow connection. I am a loyal Apple customer, and I think you are being overly cynical.

Attn: SAGE and other iBook & PowerBook users with dialup...
Here's a ~secret~ I have used when traveling and suffering from dialup-itis; it might prove awfully helpful for downloading huge UPDATES, even in your home town:
Kinko's computing center saves my **** when I'm traveling. For no charge, you can take your Mac *Book to one of their laptop stations, plug their ethernet cable into your *Book, and have highspeed internet access.
Some of their laptop stations have ethernet cords coded "Mac" as well as cords coded "PC". The cool and bizarre thing is that I find no difference (may affect connection with Kinko's printers) - both have worked equally well as internet connections on my TiBook for serveral OS X versions (and Sys 9, too, if I recall right).
[Please don't share this secret with too many PC users - I don't want to find all the laptop stations clogged ]

Sage: (or anyone else on dialup)
open the terminal and paste this:
curl http://apple.speedera.net/download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/Mac_OS_X/downloads/061-0807.20031003.AbT8b/2Z/MacOSXUpdateCombo10.2.8.dmg -o MacOSXUpdateCombo10.2.8.dmg
leave the terminal window open, you should get a status line that updates as the download progresses. Now if you get disconnected, or you close the terminal you can continue your download (after re-connecting or opening a new terminal window) by pasting in:
curl -c http://apple.speedera.net/download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/Mac_OS_X/downloads/061-0807.20031003.AbT8b/2Z/MacOSXUpdateCombo10.2.8.dmg -o MacOSXUpdateCombo10.2.8.dmg
when the download is complete, you'll have MacOSXUpdateCombo10.2.8.dmg in your home folder.
