Hi,

I've jsut got myself a broadband connection and am now wondering about all teh securtiy issues of having an always on conenction.
I've got lots of presonal stuff, and work on my computer and wouldn't want it getting trashed, or hacked.

So, I turned on the built-in Firewall and got a few questions.

When it's on, I'm assuming it blocks all access to the computer except for open ports, but how come programs like Proteus, iChat, mlmac, Mail, and Safari can still work in the same way, ie, uploading, and downloading files from my machine?

Does this mean that anyone has free reign over my HD?

Also, some programs ask for certain ports to be open to work when behind a firewall, such as Acquisition, but even when the even when it's on, it still seems to allow uploads, and downloads.

Sorry for the dumb questions, I've never really given much thought to this part of the internet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.s. I'm thinking of getting a router (airport bas station) so I can hook up the rest of my computers, how would I go about somethign like port forwarding, and what is that?

Cheers again.

MacDevCenter has an article on Jaguar's firewall, which is based upon ipfw. Read it here.

I looked at some other articles at O'Reilly some time ago too, in the BSD section.
