Ran a fresh install of OS X.2.8 and I have forgotten my password to authorize the playing of purchased songs!!

I can't even remember it with the hint!

I am currently locked out for 24 hours due to numerous incorrect attempts.

What do I do?

Wow that sucks... do you need a "fix" of music that badly?

How many songs have you purchased?

userassist@apple.com can help.

That is the Global User Administration Group. They have the power to reset passwords, verify accounts, and help with issues. If you explain the issue to them, tell them your Apple ID (your iTunes Music Store username), that you have purchased a lot of music, etc., they may give you instructions for verifying your account. After all, your credit card number is associated with the account; clearly, that can be verified. They may have to bounce it to iTunes Music Store Customer Service, but someone will be able to help.

Yeah, one would think that would be the case (having the card info on file) but NO.

Basically, it came down to "Gee sir, I'm really sorry but there is nothing I can do. Have you considered re-purchasing the music?"

A forty-minute conversation came down to that.......... absolutely nothing!

I will never spend another cent at that Go**amn music store.

I cannot believe I forgot my password!

Actually it should be called: useless assistance@apple.c*m.

If you really bought several hundred dollars of music, why would you give up so easily?

I've always been satisfied with Apple's service. They bend over backwards to help you. You have proof of who you are (your credit card # on your account). You can receive email on the account email. Just tell them to reset your password and send it to you via email. It has to happen all the time.

With 9 posts, people will likely think you a troll. And you may be.

Troll? Who cares.

I have spoken with Apple and they could not help me. I do not have a ".Mac" account. My user ID was my old e-mail address from a previous IP, that has since changed. If I had a ".Mac" account I am sure that would be very easy to change on their end........ but I do not.

I'm just frustrated at myself AND Apple.

Well, with forgetting your password and your email changing, you're certainly in an unusual situation.. but your credit card number should STILL be good enough to prove who you are. Don't give up - calling the credit card company might help.

...and in future, REMEMBER OR WRITE DOWN PASSWORDS, and CHANGE EMAIL ADDRESSES TO ONES YOU CAN RECEIVE. It's worth the bother if it saves you hundreds of dollars, yes?

Good advice.

Though it just dawned on me while recalling my phone conversation with Apple that he may have thought I had forgotten my SYSTEM password, which obviously he could not help me with.

I remember he said "Do you have another computer that you could transfer the songs to and authorize them on that computer?"
I can think of no other reason for him to say that unless he believed I could not access my current computer with the songs on it.

But, as I just read this post, that doesn't make sense because you are never prompted for a SYSTEM password to authorize songs in ITMS.

I will call again tomorrow.

It is strange that you are not given the option to verify your account through your credit card information........ I mean there is no other way to purchase songs through ITMS, so it should be a verification option.

In my opinion.

Did you have the password saved to your keychain & do you have a backup of it? If so, use the Keychain Access program to get it.

Subject: Forgotten ITMS Password [UA:209753]

Hello,

I called the AppleCare 800 number and I was told that your Music Store password is the same as your .Mac account and if you need to reset it, you go to your .Mac account and follow the instructions.

If you do require further assistance with this same issue, please, contact AppleCare at 1-800-275-2273.

Thank you.

Regards,

I spoke to rep at that number and he told me that there was nothing he
could do.

Look, all I want to do is have my ITMS password reset so I can change
it and authorize my new computer to play the songs I have previously
purchased through the ITMS.

I have forgotten the Password to my Apple ID. You guys have all of my
credit card info, can I not just verify that?!?!

Thank You.

Dear Music Store Customer,

Thank you for contacting iTunes Music Store Customer Service.

To recover a lost password, even for an email address to which you no longer have access, use Apple's iForgot page.

Comments : I have a real problem....... I recently reformatted my drive (wrote zeros) and I cannot remember my "old" apple id password to authorize previously purchased songs on my computer.

I was under the impression that backing up my info to an external drive would be enough........ not so.

My "old" apple id was "thescout@earthlink.net"
(I no longer have access to that e-mail account)
I do no remember the password but the hint is: "Offspring?"

My birthdate is 08-18-0.

Please help.

Well as you can see, Apple isn't much help. I spoke to another rep today and he told me that once the credit card is processed they basically have no record of it for security purposes. Which makes absolutely no sense what-so-ever at all! When a song is purchased it uses the credit card number tagged to the user id which cannot exist without a user password.

Oh well, guess I'm screwed. Pretty lousy customer support if you ask me......... every link they have sent me (posted above) requires a user id password to continue..... which I have forgotten.

1. Call Earthlink and have them reactivate your account.

2. Use the account to receive the password reset email.

3. Close the Earthlink account.

It will cost you a months worth of Earthlink which will almost certainly be less than whatever you've spent on music.

(p.s. while you're in Earthlink, setup a forward for your Earthlink account to your new account. Those stay active for years, apparently. I still get stuff addressed to my Mindspring/Earthlink account, and it's been a few years.)

Good idea!

Would the mail sent to that addy STILL be on the server?

I cancelled Earthlink about four months ago.

Yes, you can rightly call me a fool for not forwarding my e-mail.

Learning my lesson.

depends on how long ago you cancelled. If it's a matter of months, I'm guessing there's a better than average chance the answer is yes.

Even if not, your account is probably 'dormant' and can be reactivated quickly.

Best of luck.

I have nothing of quality to post except for the iForgot thing. I think it's pretty cute that Apple throws that in there..
