I have 512MB on my iMac and 640 in my iBook... I have Menu Meters to watch memory and network activity. How come both computers insist on using swap files instead of memory? I always have a huge excess of free memory that is just sitting there while once in a while, the HD grinds unneccesarily. Any reasons why or what? The system should use free memory until it needs more free ram and then it should switch to swaps...

All as artificial as the Matrix itself, although only a human mind could invent something as insipid as Love.

How do you know it's using the swap file? And anyway, OS X always uses the swap file, no matter how much memory you have. As long as it's just pageins, and no pageouts, you're still good.

A subjective statement. I never had much of an excess of RAM when I had 512mb installed.
I would be curious to see what top would show compared to what menumeters is showing.
Here is mine after using it all day:
PhysMem: 74.6M wired, 229M active, 497M inactive, 802M used, 29.8M free
VM: 4.65G + 83.0M 54566(0) pageins, 489(0) pageouts

you need to update your sig, your iBook says only 256mb

I'm running a DP MDD with 768mb and this is what I usually get . . .

PhysMem: 67.9M wired, 429M active, 250M inactive, 747M used, 20.8M free
VM: 4.81G + 3.62M 65974(0) pageins, 143744(0) pageouts

with menu meters saying the same thing, and uptime is 4 days if that makes any difference.

VM: 6.04G + 80.0M 229563(11) pageins, 536566(0) pageouts

UPTIME: 4:29PM up 7 days, 1:25, 2 users, load averages: 0.67, 0.70, 0.64

I'm not an uptime freak, but it's nice to see that my computer doesn't die every day like with OS 9...

Ugh, no doubt. I would've rather seen Steve use a 12 gauge shotgun and skeet shoot an OS 9 CD rather than stick it into a coffin.
