What happened to 3rd Party Software Update?

I remember hearing talk that Apple was going to provide an API for developers so they could use the software update service to handle updating their apps, is this still happening?

If there was talk it was only a rumor.

Apple haven't released an API but there is a 3rd party software updating application called Renew. I haven't tried it though.
