I can no longer log in as root, when I try it acts liek it is going to login, with the progress bar then the screen goes blank like its about to show the finder but it goes back to the log in prompt instead.

Has anyone seen this behavior? Have a solution?

edit: I have done a repair permissions, it had no effect.

Nevermind - I did some shell mucking and got it going (things like removing root preference files, and other root home dir cleanup)
I can now log in as root.

The man's right. Use su or sudo if you need root privileges.

I was only logging in as root to backup some user dirs. I suppose I could have just done it using su from command line, but I wanted to fix my root login anyway.
