From Apple's site:
Mac OS X Version 10.3 requires a Macintosh with a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor, built-in USB; at least 128MB of physical RAM and a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer. Mac OS X does not support processor upgrade cards.
They said the same thing (see bold) about Jaguar, but I was still able to boot and do a clean install of it on my DP800 with a mac-rom flashed PC Radeon 8500. Does anyone know if this will be a Problem with Panther?

Plus, what's this about not supporting upgrade cards? Does this mean it won't work in my 1.2GHz Gigdesigns Sawtooth? Or are they really referring to non-G3 systems upgraded to G3/G4s?

Is this has been discussed, can someone link me to it?

OK. That thread takes care of the CPU issue, but not the flashed processor issue.

You mean flashed video cards? I'm using a Giga Designs 1 GHZ, OC'ed to 1.07, and a flashed PC Radeon 8500. It was supposed to be a real mac one, but the guy on ebay lied on his ad . But its working as Just it did in Jaguar. ( Phantom monitor syndrom)

Well this recipe do not work at all:

PowerMac G4 400 (Sawtooth)
GeForce2MX (flashed)
Panther 7B85

Complete blank screen after the grey logo and the spinning wheel.

Reverting back to the factory ATI Rage 128 Pro and Panther startup fine (without QE of course).

Using Mac OS X 10.2.x with the GeForce2MX is a success (QE enabled and all the fun).

I am really pissed...

G4 450 OCed from 400
Radeon 8500 flashed PC version

The cdr isn't supported by 10.2.8 from Finder so I have to burn a cdrw with Toast.
It won't install , the cdrw won't show up as bootable so I burn another..shows up once but never again.
When it did show up that one time it hangs at an image of a circle with a line through it at a gray screen.

So I'm wondering if it's the non Apple supplied vid card or the fact that the cdr wont burn a bootable cdrw on a non Apple supplied/supported cdr.

My buddy with an Apple supplied cdr and vid card in his Mac ( has to he's an ADC member/dev) has no problem whatsoever.

Yup. Same here. I mentioned it in a few other threads and have heard from other users having the same issues. No GeForce cards appear to work in the Sawtooth w/ Panther.

I wonder if Jaguar to Panther video problems can be solved by copying Jaguar drivers to Panther?

Installed no problem with your flashed 8500?
Great..thanks. So that eliminates one problem.

I'm guessing I cannot use Toast to burn the cdrw then.
Have to find a Finder supported cdr to use Disc Copy.
Anyone disagree or have a different experience?

Sawtooth 400. 1.25 GB RAM, 80 GB HD. The only problem I had was my old adaptec SCSI card which slowed the computer to a crawl. I had to remove that and everything was excellent.

I even inserted a NTFS-formatted 80 GB HD in it and it worked just excellent.

Me too (the ADC version), and I have a Gigadesigns 800 MHz updgrade and an LG CDRW, but that's supported in Jaguar.

All is well here now.
It was how I burned the dmgs.
There is a way to get around Disk Copy and use Toast to burn a bootable cd.

Some of the personal desktop images that I've used in Jag are messed up in Panther.
They show up ok in choices but not when applied to screen, they become blurred.
I'm wondering if it's a flashed 8500 problem.

I got lost among some of the posts! Basic queston: I have a 400 MZ G4, nearly 3 years old. I was getting ready to finally get a Sonnet upgrade card, thinking ahead to Panther.

It sounds like it's not supported by Apple, but will work anyway. I do have an Apple SCSI card in there, too -- but now that I think about it, I think everything is finally USB or Firewire and I don't even need the SCSI card.

Will this set up work, if I get the SOnnet upgrade card?
Thanks.
