Is it just me or has the Dock been forgotten by Apple and its developers?
It had a rough start, but it seems very few devs take advantage of what it can do...
iChat: status, etc... everything the menu widget does.
iCal: To Do's, New Event, etc
Address Book: group listing
Safari: special Dock group or mirror of the Fav Bar
Transmit: Bookmarks, status updates, etc
I am sure you can think of a million more.
Or have I just misunderstood the whole point of it being down there to begin with?

You've misunderstood the whole point of it being there.

I would be very upset of my dock was a freaking christmas tree with bouncing and badges flashing at every corner.
I think it is being utilized rather well.
I do wish they would add a few more options when you click and hold on the icon. "Show in Finder" and "Quit" aren't all that extensive...

I think that's what the original poster was getting at. Apple doesn't seem to utilize the contextual menus at all. It would be nice to have certain bookmarks when I right click on the Safari icon, or be able to create a new event in iCal, etc. It would be more convenient.

I wouldn't mind seeing more options, but I would HATE to see them start using it too much... or require it to get to some menus...
It's really for newer users... most pros use key combos...

One thing that isn't in most dock menus is a "hide" command. It would really be helpful. You can get the feature from ASM or related apps. But one really shouldn't need to.

All I want for the Dock to have is BUILT-IN separators.

A few things Apple could add to the dock. First off a "hide" command that hides all the applications' windows. You can do that with programs like ASM and a few applications actually do include it in their context menu. But most don't.
As someone else mentioned, natural dock dividers would be very nice. I personally would love a dock where the application windows are left-justified and the trash and minimized icons are right-justified. But I doubt that will happen so I just right justify the entire dock.
I'd like to see dock animation used a bit more as well. This is dangerous as it can certainly get out of hand. But, for instance, I'd like some indication of what an application in the background is doing via the dock.
I'd also like better drag and drop support via the dock. Right now dropping onto an icon just "opens" it via that application. But with an open application it would be nice to have the application come to the front so you can select where to drag and drop it. Obviously not relevant to all applications, but it is to some where window location for the drop is significant. (This would be a natural way to lead into popup folders as well)

Oh yeah, one more thing:
When I was still using Cocktail, I used the "grey out" hidden icons feature.
If that would be made native too, it would be too good to be true
