Hello,

I'm the only person who "logs in" on my macs at the house.

I would like to find out how, when one clicks on a folder, a prompt will appear, asking for a password.

is this possible on os x?

thanks,

Jason

That is kind of pointless. You need to logon to the computer to access those files anyway. So if the computer is logged out, no one can get to the files. If other people are using the computer, they should have their own user account, so your files would not be able to be accessed by them anyway. Sharing accounts defeats one of the reasons for using Mac OS X (and any other multi user OS)

Maybe you could give some more detail as to why you need to do this. There might be a better solution.

Then again, in a multi-user environment, a suspicious user would perhaps like to shield some information from Admins. If an admin wants to, they can access any account and the stuff within.

Locking a folder with a non-account related password would be a solution.

The Apple way would be to use Disk Copy to create an encrypted Disk Image, where the user can store stuff. Do a search for detailed instructions.

Software, like Crypt can encode files, I'm not sure about folders. Again, it's not a simple lock, but actually encrypting the stuff.

That is probably the best way to do it.
