I got these errors on my boot partition when running Disk Repair and fsck, but no matter how many times I run it, they don't go away. Does anyone know what it means and how to fix it?

Also, if it isn't fixable without some expensive software like DiskWarrior, is getting them fixed urgent? Im planning on formatting and doing a clean install of Panther when I hopefully get my copy delivered on the 24th, so would I be able to hold out for 2 weeks? Thanks

I had this problem until recently, but unfortunately, no, there is no easy solution to the problem. Here is a link to a discussion of this problem over at Apple's fora. I fixed the extents error with a combination of TechTool Deluxe and Norton DD (which isn't as bad as some folks seem to indicate - or maybe I was just lucky). If you've got two comps, bring up the system with the corrupt filesystem is FireWire Target mode - otherwise you'll need another partition (on the same disk or not) to boot from.

The problem seems benign, but the longer you let the problem persist the more corrupted your FS can/will become. I had to fix mine as I couldn't run VISE style installers (as they attempt to traverse the entire FS to determine installation paths). A good course of action would be to back up all of your irreplaceable data now, regardless of your timeline for reformatting. You then can (a) wait, save a bit of money and gamble that nothing terrible will happen until the 24th. or; (b) attempt to fix the FS issue (though this will require the purchase of the 3rd Party application). I'd go with (b), but I am a little paranoid.

Interestingly enough, the extents problem was present on my G5 out0of0the-box! Very frustrating...

P.S. - Please do backup, otherwise you're taking unnecessary risks (for which you'll curse yourself later - I know from personal experience).

Or. if you have another partition or plenty of space on an external drive, just copy all your important data over and reformat now and reinstall.

By the way, $80 spent on DiskWarrior now is an investment well spent. It has saved me many times.

Is it compatible with Panther? The last thing I want to do is spend 80 bucks for the thing and only be able to play frisbee with it

I have had two bouts of overlapped extent allocations -- used Disk Warrior to fix them. I do not know if DW is compatible with Jaguar or not -- interesting queston.

However, I was told that the problem IS indeed a serious one and if not fixed, can lead to your whole drive, eventually, going bad. Hmmm, got that from the Apple forums, interestingly enough.
