I just reinstalled Jaguar on an imac 400 DV, but I can't install internet on it. The section in NETWORK that offers SHOW (network port configurations) contains the INTERNAL ETHERNET only !

Where is INTERNAL MODEM when I need it?

I didn't erase anything yet. I actually zero'd the drive to clean it and did a clean install of jaguar after that. This way I cannot connect internet. I have no airport too.

In fact I reinstalled this machine 3 times but it refuses to give anything more than INTERNAL ETHERNET

How do I install the network port only?

Does your modem show in the System Profiler? Possibly it isn't working. What kind of install of Jag did you do?

It's an external serial cablemodem, that is connected by KEYSPAN adapter.

bytheway :The modem is working under OS9 (seperate partition)

the weird thing is, I used the same installationcd's to install my powerbook 17" with and that NETWORK controlpanel is in perfect health. Now all it shows is INTERNAL ETHERNET

OK, now I am confused. Your original post stated that the internal modem wasn't working. Now you want to install a serial port as a network port?
Is that a Keyspan USA-28x?

The main-issue is :

The network ports are not showing in the NETWORK control panel except "internal ethernet", this is all before I start doing things like configuring the cablemodem, so I think that's quite irrelevant.

How do I add network ports?

...And Aren't you going to need an OS X driver for that thing? I wouldn't hold your breath. Have you used that in X before?

Go to Network pref pane. Pull down the Show menu. Select Network Port Configurations. Does it show there? Is the box checked? That's also where you can enable the internal modem.

No because that is the main issue, the networkports are not showing except internal ethernet

forget the cablemodem. Let\'s focus on the controlpanel

Hmmm, well. Did you do a fresh install of Jag or reinstalled Jag over what was already there?
I have never seen that particular problem. Do you have the utility program Cocktail? If not, download it and try to clear your cache files with it.

Yeah, its weird, I'll try that Cocktail program.

Normally you can delete ports, in this case I start with 1 (ethernet) only. Cant I copy stuff from a healthy OSX? My powerbook is running fine with the same installation.

(just to let you know. this imac DV had jaguar running with internet this morning , before i erased the drive)

I don't know how to add a port, that previously was deleted. I assume system profiler can see your modem?
Don't know if Cocktail will help here, but I have seen Pref Pane options disappear and removing the cache files and restarting would enable certain features to magically reappear.
Since you did an erase of the drive, obviously nothing from the previous install is interfering. You will have to install a driver for the Keyspan to support the serial cable modem.
Also, create another user and see if the same problems exists there.

Have you installed the Keyspan s/w?
Does the internal modem show in ASP in X?
Is the internal modem recognized when the serial modem is not attached (after restart maybe)?
Can't you just add the internal modem port in Net Port Configs (click New)?
Can you add the other modem that way as well?

I bet it's a corrupt pref file.
Sorry to say I don't know which one.... But you could try testing this through a different user. This might shed some light on where it is.

does the machine say "safe mode" during boot? cause that can cause only the built-in ethernet to be available in network pref pane.

no, it doesnt say safeboot. i can use everything fine in os9, but osx is white below memory specs, nothing about printers or network. so weird. creating a new user ends up with the same problem. i reinstalled the machine again and still no networkports !

i cry
