I require some ppl to perform a trial test for me. This test is required so i can begin to plan my options.
The time to make some big decisions is upon me. I need to know if this page/applet will run on Panther/Safari. If it works great, i can buy Panther an prepare to stay on with the Mac an buy a new G4 AL PB. If not it's time i retired from Mac's an go buy some Intel hardware.

Here are the instructions

Please go to https://www.hushmail.com/

1) Click 'GO' on left of page in blue under 'Hushmail Sign up'

Next page Loads

2) Down the bottom click the 'I Agree >>' button

Next page loads '>>_Account Creation:'

3) Click the 'Next >>>' button

Next page says 'The Hush Encryption Engine is loading. Please be patient, and remember to answer "Yes" when you are asked to install software.'

This is as far as a Mac Browser on OS X or classic will get to. Nothing else happens an the Applet is not loaded. However on a PC there are further steps as show on the right side of the page :

> Steps:

Load the Hush Encryption Engine
Choose your username
Generate encryption keys
Choose your passphrase

I need to know if Safari on Panther GM will go all the way to the end of the steps and successfully create an account? Im sure this will only take 5 mins of someone's time on a fast connection. I urge anyone with spare time an the above mentioned requirements to test it out. Again, this will go toward determining my future on a Mac platform.

Thanks inadvance

If that is the only reason keeping you with the Mac platform then you probably shouldn't stay at all.

Safari won't stay at version 1.1 forever, you know. What if it doesn't run now, but two or three weeks later Apple introduces a new version of Safari that does?

Have you tried using Internet Explorer to open said account? Will Safari work with one that is already opened? If so, you can continue to work with it until such time that Safari works well with it.

Edit - I take it back, after a minute or two it popped up. Looks like it'll work fine, but I wont install it...

Doesn't seem to work...

There is NO need to say "or I'm going to Windows bla bla bla" You are old enough to make that decision...

P.S. You aren't going to get any "oh please don't do that" from this forum...

Try MacAddict's forum for such blubbering...

Person man-I have been waiting on the Mac platform for nearly 5 years for this Java thing to work it self out. There has been absolutely no progress. The problem is not just Safari...its the Mac OS's Java as well. If i bothered to take the time to explain more i would have mentioned that there is NOT 1 SINGLE browser that has EVER worked on the Mac with this Hushmail due to differing reasons for each browser.

Currently Safari is 'THE ONLY' browser who's Java plug uses the NEW Cocoa 1.4.1 Java bundle. All other browsers can only use 1.3.1Java an Apple hasnt documented anything here so the other developers are in a bind. Additionally some other browsers on the Mac DONT support 'LiveConnect' (IE, iCab etc) which Hushmail needs so the applet can communicate with the browser.

Really i have tried ALL options.

Hrm so it doesnt get any further than the steps above? Not good

Yes i know im old enough to make a decision, but its one id sincerely rather NOT have to make. Im not going to sit here trying to justify that tho, it really be extremely hard to make a transition like this. So much time invested into Mac's...:-(((

I'm afraid that this site does not use Java, instead it uses Microsoft's Java knock off, wrapped in a downloadable Windows DLL. I write Java applications and have never found a single line of Java code that would not run on OS X.

However this is not Java(TM) but a windows specific knock off. It won't work in Linux. It won't work on the Mac. It will never work on the Mac - unless you feel like downloading the source code and porting it to something like Java Web Start (which works on the Mac) or an Applet (which also work).

Dumping the Mac because Windows applications don't run on it is fair enough, and thats what this is. But its nothing to do with Apples support of Java.

I did some looking into this. I could only get it to work in Win IE. Firebird on Windows and OS X wouldn't touch it. Anyway the problem appears to be this:

Hush Encryption Engine Version 2.3.0.41
netscape.javascript.JSException
at netscape.javascript.JSObject.getWindow(JSObject.ja va:144)
at com.hush.core.security.applet.HushEncryptionEngine .init(Unknown Source)
at sun.applet.AppletPanel.run(AppletPanel.java:347)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:554)

This was output by Safari. That shows that the applet loads (first line) but some sort of JavaScript exception occurs while init is being run. Can't really work out any more than that.

Edit: just noticed the source code is available for download, I'll have a look through it.
