20" Cinema Display will not stay asleep

I'm having problems with my 20" Cinema Display to stay asleep (I really wish it had an OFF switch).

The display will usually sleep on time, with no problems. The issue is that it keeps turning back on. When I'm trying to sleep this is a royal pain in the butt.

I have tried turning off the front touch-static controls, but that did not work. I created a new user with no items in the Login Items, but it still kicked back in after 5-10 minutes. I unplugged all of my peripherals, except for the keyboard, and it still kicked back on.

During all of this, I have no programs running in the dock, either.

Anyone have any ideas on how I might fix this? I have a Dual 1.25 MDD.

thanks

Could it be that it's receiving signals from your mouse or keyboard? Try disconnecting these and see if the monitor stays asleep.

I have already removed the mouse, and the problem persists. I can try removing the keyboard tonite (it is at home, and i am at work ), but wouldn't that need a key to be pressed to have that happen?

I guess that the keyboard might be defective, but is this likely?

If you hold down CMD-Shift while launching System Preferences, and then go to display, you will see a third tab called Options. There you can turn off the controls on the front of the display.

Though I can't recall the details, I just saw some mention of waking problems relating to either screen saver or desktop picture being set to rotate the picture automatically.

This wasn't Cinema related so I don't know if it applies. Sorry.

Thanks for the help, but my desktop has a static background image.

I did about a month ago, but for a different reason. I was having problems before, and after I zapped it.

Is there anything else I can zap? I'm getting irritated with this problem and shocking the hell out of it would make me happy

thanks for your help!

Try zapping it again.

Other then that I would try a clean install and DO NOT import your old prefs.

Yeah well... maybe try dumping the prefs/rebooting BEFORE going through a reinstall, but that's just me.

I'm sorry for asking what is probably a really simple question -- but how do I do this? I am a switcher, and still don't know how to do some things...

I too have that same problem with my 20" display. I will put it to sleep by menu or it may sleep by the timer and a while later I go by the room and viola! It's back on again. Hate to keep shutting the computer down to keep the display off. I don't want to put hours of "use" on the display when I'm not looking at it.

Hey, imagine how bad switching the other way is?

For both you and Bill... I don't have a CDisplay so I can't help solve the problem.

My comment above meant that a reinstall should be a last resort. I don't know what preference or driver type files are used with your display. Drivers may become corrupted but usually it's a system created pref file that causes the little day to day 'gotchas'. The system recreates them at boot up if they've been removed (Don't remove the drivers, if any, those would have to be reinstalled from the system disks).

Besides asking here, you should be checking other net sources, forums and the Apple Knowledge Base.

Problem solved! Reset the PRAM, but did not solve it, so went into open firmware

Reboot, hold down CMD-OPT-O-F

and then typed in

reset-nvram
reset-all

perfect! thanks for everyone's help.
