For the past 6 months I haven't been able to reliably send mail, attachments are corrupted almost all the time and my FTP uploads are also uniformly corrupted. Has anyone else had a similar experience using OS X and Sympatico DSL?

I'm not running any kind of 3rd party software that would use the network. My modem is connected directly to my Mac which otherwise shows no problems at all. The corruption happens regardless of FTP program. Any ideas are much appreciated.

I vaguely remember Sympatico problems (especially upload) from like 3 years ago. Your options:
1. Get a better modem if possible
2. Adjust your MTU settings
3. Use Broadband Optimizer.

Never ever switch to Videotron. Their crappy service and shxtty modems give me hard time, and you cannot cancel without a penalty. Oh, there's also a download limit.

If you are sure that your DSL connection works with other computers and it's your Mac that's misbehaving, there's always the possibility to buy a simple router for about $40 (e.g. from Netgear or DLink).
Then your Mac will be connected to the internet via LAN and the Router will handle the connection via the DSL modem. If you don't like the integrated Firewall, just setup a DMZ on the router (very easy) and you won't ever notice that you are no longer directly connected to the Internet.
$40 is probably cheaper than buying another modem or switching the DSL provider.

It appears that the problem was caused by a defective modem. I replaced the modem and now things are back to normal.

Oh yeah? Well I'm on Videotron Extreme and have been with them for 3 years...no problems ever , except when the strikers chopped the lines last year. As a matter of fact the BS marketing DSL companies use that have you saying cable sucks because you share connections with the neighbors is a load of crap. I still get 500 to 650 upload and 3400 to 3800 download from NewYork. I have never seen a dsl connection even come close.
How is yours?
My download capacity is unlimited...regular highspeed is 5g up 15 g down.

And... I don't have to have a separate app or setup anything special to connect.

Don't believe the hype.

Oh and 10.3 is just peachy

Here, having a cable modem means having port 80 and 25 blocked, which is a no-go for me..

Not to be a pro-port blocker, but they simply don't want you hosting web sites and potentially sending tons spam. BOTH of which can be circumvented rather easily.

Comcast doesn't block anything, and it's nice to have a little server to play around with at times, but it's not a deal breaker for me.

It is a deal breaker for me, since I'm not running Windows anywhere, that most security holes doesn't affect me and that I'm running a personnal web and mail server. It was part of my deal with my ISP, which is a Sympatico reseller.. at least they threat their customers right! If you can read french and want to know what happenned, go read this..
