What are your thoughts with running OS X 10.3 on an older g3 model. Either a Beige Desktop or a Tower.

Would you be able to run it effectively with even say... a 9600 with a g3 upgrade?

Or should I not even both? What would YOUR recommended computer specs be to run OS X in general?

I'd recommend a G5

But seriously, Panther just requires any G3+ Mac with built-in USB. I think this discounts the beige G3s but certainly anything from a blue and white tower upwards will work. I've got a 333 MHz iMac, and I plan on installing Panther on it. In fact, the performance boost on older machines is supposed to be dramatic. It'll certainly do me until the Rev B. G5s come out. I've been running Jaguar quite happily on this little box (6 GB HDD, 288 MB RAM).

Apple doesn't officially support upgrade cards (like your example of a 9600 with a G3 upgrade) but that doesn't mean it won't work.

IIRC the in-built USB requirement is firm though. OS X just won't install on anything without in-built USB (beige G3s, the first G3 PowerBook). But I'm not 100% on that

EDIT: Should point out that when I say "I've been running Jaguar quite happily on this little box", I mean just for word processing, internet browsing, and the odd older game or two. There is no 3D graphics support, no quartz extreme, although there is 2D hardware acceleration.

I'm running Jaguar on a 266mhz Tangerine iMac and it's okay. Just okay. Like prior posts, I'm only using that machine for internet play and simple word apps. I've heard that Panther is configured in such a way to work very well on older iMacs, but I've only seen rumors. The "officials" claim this is not so and recommend much more video RAM than is available in my machine. Anyone with conclusive evidence would be greatly appreciated. The Panther install on that ol' iMac will be excrutiatingly slow. I'm giving it at least 3 hours. Will it be worth it?!

Where are the official claims that installing Panther on old machines is not recommended? Do you have a link?

a while back i ran an early beta of panther on my B&W 450MHz G3 with stock video card. it was faster than jaguar. menus much snappier and it just felt faster. there were no compatibility issues with any of my firewire or usb devices. i have gone back to jaguar, but i will have no hesitation to install the gm when it gets released.

btw - how can you get a 9600 in a PCI only machine like a beige or B&W. i thought the radeon 7000 was the pinnacle of PCI cards for the mac?

That is because B&W PowerMacs are fully supported.

Please do a search before posting next time. This topic has been covered to death already.

Beige G3s are not supported, and Panther will not install on them without something like XPostFacto.

As for G3s that ARE supported, Panther is supposedly much faster than Jaguar on them.
