Was curious if anyone still had screenshots of the pre-pubic beta builds of OS X.
Just for sh*ts and giggles, with all the Panther improvements coming, thought it would be a fun stroll to see how far the OS has truly come. Anyone?

I still have my Developer Build 2 CDs at my fathers house.
I should try to load them on my Beige G3...

Here's a schot of DP3 I found with Google.
DP2 File Viewer:
Classic apparently ran from a disk image in DP2:
DP2 Classic Startup:
DP2 Process Monitor:
DP2 Developer Tools could apparently build for x86:

There are a few screenshots over at this page. It's all russian, but pretty easy to navigate anyway.
DP3 was such a funny experience. You'd turn it on, look at it, have fun with the dock, then boot back into OS 9.

I launched DP2... (took forever) ran the terminal (I knew it would be nice) looked around, knew that there weren't ANY applications for it, and booted back into 8 for the next year or so.
I then tried the PB for a little while. Nice, but lacking the Apple style... went back to OS 9 for my normal work.
I made the full time switch at 10.2

DP3 was great, day after day checking SoftTrack www.stepwise.com to see if any new applications hadd been released. I rememember being really excited seeing Aqua running for the first time on my own computer. I still think I prefer the look of the old Dick though. The tiles were nice, as was the 1px thick line underneath to say what app's running (and which is in the foreground).
Much fun to be had. I also really liked the mp3Player.app although I don't think that appeared till DP4. Anyone rememeber?

Here's some I took way back when.
They're supposed to be Aqua, but I took the screenshots 'cause it had reverted back to Platinum due to a bug. Apparently you could force it to do this, but in this case, it was an accident.

Try here They have screenshots and info from DP2 (no Aqua!) to Mac OS X v10.2.
Also for a screenshot of he first "Aquatic" X, go here.
For a look at Raphsody (one of the OS X descendants) try here. As for NeXT, look here. For a look at old Aqua widgets vs. new Aqua widgets, try here.
Yes I know of a lot.
ArsTechnica (first link) has DP2, DP3, DP4, Beta, 10.0, 10.1, 10.2.

I really like the NeXT look. It's professional and makes me feel like I'm using a workstation and not just a mass consumer orientated OS. But still, we've come along way and Panther is amazing.

Oh! That brings back some memories. That's the screenshot Apple had up back when Aqua was introduced, isn't it?
I think it'd be really great to have an article made comparing visual differences starting back at DP3 and going up to Panther (and heck, even go all the way and start back with System 6 or whichever it was that the first Macs ran).

All right. You got me. How long does an icon live before it's redesigned? The simpletext icon was the same for a looong time...

Also it used to be rotated to the right, now it's rotated to the left.
Also, i'm glad apple separated applications and minimised apps/windows on the dock. that would've been a mess to use everyday.

Though it would be fun for filatelists, if Apple would stream famous stamps into the icon

I started using OS X full time with DP4. It ran great on my B&W G3 350 Mhz.
I remember showing all my friends that I was running a Unix box - but no, not untill 10.0 did they finally believe me. :-)
yes, i remember the stepwise days too!

I'm glad apple dropped the platinum look for OSX. It just doesn't seem like a new OS if it looks like OS9. I think Steve wanted it to look and feel different from OS9 and it does.
I wonder just how "snappy" OSX would be if Aqua was just toned down a bit, though. I guess it won't matter when Panther comes out.
