I've got Panther (from Apple, completely legit, and I didn't need to sign an NDA so I'm free to talk about it), and I'm noticing that all the fonts seem vertically stretched.

Has anyone else noticed this? Isn't it weird? I'm not liking it, personally.

To see what I mean, compare this:

To this:

Yeah, the font size is smaller, but the lower one just looks too tall, doesn't it?

Apple altered the rendering of Lucida Grande at small sizes to bring the characters closer together. IMHO, it looks a lot better in most circumstances - less wasted space too.

I see. Personally, I hate it. I wish there was a way to turn it off.

Well, thanks for the info!

I think I like the new way... I wonder how Apple comes up with this crap? Is there a team of people that are as anal as they come... they toss them all in a room with OS X for a few days and they come out with a list a mile long with various bitches...

Or is it all Steve :-)

If it were just in the Finder windows, I probabaly wouldn't mind it. But it's making my system menus look funky, my browser fonts look weird...it just rubs me the wrong way.

Here's hoping 10.3.1 adds a checkbox to disable it (or even better, selectively enable/disable it).

Not sure why you hate it, it's easier to read. If it's about taking up more just lower the font size from 12 to 11 or to 10.

Helvetica and Times also looks taller in Panther than in Jaguar.

They almost look condensed.

I don't find it easier to read at all; I find that I'm constantly distracted by how wrong the fonts look. My eyes can't get past it.
