Hello,
I have an iBook G3 800MHz (which is about 6 months old). I was surfing the net, minding my own business when the display started to crap out. First I saw these thin lines appear on the screen, then the mouse cursor stopped responding, and finally more lines appeared all over the screen.
I forced a shut down, waiting a few minutes and rebooted, only to have the same problem again. Seems like overheating graphics chip, but I can't be sure.
The only thing I recently did was update iTunes to 4.1, update QuickTime and update to the latest OS X patches.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was the first problem I encountered with my iBook in its 4th month. Apparently it may have been caused by a frayed video wire. It would cause the screen to freeze on movement. The solution was a motherboard replacement. Unfortunately this led to more problems down the road. Good luck.

I rebooted without the battery in it and everything seems to be working fine. Don't think it's a major HW problem.
Anyone have this issue before?

Sure does smell like this would go better in the iBook section.
Anyways, I'm having similar issues @ 1 month out of warranty... lucky me! My sleep magnet has also been displaced, so now it doesn't sleep when I shut the lid. Weee
Because of the dual issues, the local mac shop ( guys that actually have certs for laptops ) told me that in the long run it would be cheaper to send it to Apple for the flat 400 dollar repair that'll take care of it all. So, that's what I'm going to do.
Excited for me? This is part of my tuition money. For joy...

I had the same problem, 13 months after I bought my iBook. The thing either wouldn't turn on at all, and on the rare occasions it did, it would go haywire as you described if I even nudged it. I had to send it back to Apple.
Do yourself a favor, ASAP. Back everything up, and then call Apple to arrange to have it repaired, while you can still turn it on.

Yup. Did it too. Take it back to your local Mac dealer and they can fix it for you under your 1 year Apple Care contact you got with the purchase of the machine.
If you call Apple first, they'll give you a reference number which your Mac dealer will use to bill Apple for the repair.
If they have the part in stock, it should take about 2 days. If not, about 4-5 days depending.
You won't have to pay a dime.

Welcome to the club. Happened to my 800 iBook too. It seems to be a common problem. Brought mine to a nearby Apple store and they sent it out and it was repaired under the 1 year warranty. I'm about a month shy of it's year anniversary, so I'll be getting Applecare for it - a $249 investment is better than a $300+ repair bill!

Put me down for a "me too", please.
Common problem, if you can't tell from the posts, that Apple knows about and since your iBook is 6 months old it is under warranty. Ship it in, get it fixed.
