We got a good deal on a 1.25 dualie. Can I attach it to my current G3 via FW, boot it into FW disk mode and install apps from my G3 while I continue to work on other projects?

Will I run tinto any problems w/perms, etc if I do this? The user infor will be the same on both Macs since I will be getting rid of my accnt on the G3 and handing it off to someone else.

I only have 1 monitor available. Thats why I want to do it this way.

Yes.

Once you reboot the new machine, FIRST THING to do is to repair permissions via Disk Utility.

Cool.

Should I boot from the OSX CD or can I do this while logged in?

I honestly don't think it would make a difference, as long as it's done first thing.

I moved my entire home folder, applications, and much of /Library from one machine to a new one that was hooked up in Target disk mode, without problems.

There may be weird *nixy oddities that I don't know about, though, but I don't *think* so.

You can't do this. The blue and white G3, and the Yikes G4 that followed it, are the only two Mac models with onboard firewire that do not support target disk mode or Firewire booting.

Which means he CAN do this, because if you read his post, you will see that he's going to hook up his new dual 1.25GHz G4, booted in target disk mode, to his G3, and then install apps from his G3.

FYI: Repair permissions only works when you have booted from the startup disk. Strange but true.

The dualie is backordered until later this week, so I haven't had a chance to experiment. Thanks for the replies and I'll be sure to post a follow-up about this when I get the apps installed.

Update...

It worked like a charm. This is a much easier method than setting up 2 machines. Thanks for your help.
