You'll have to use an IP address on both machines, example:
1) WinXP = 10.0.0.1
2) MacOS X = 10.0.0.2
Share a folder on your WinXP machine, then from your MacOS X machine you should see that shared folder on the "Network" side bar.
If this doesn't help, you could always turn on the "Windows" file sharing on your network preferences.
