Well, I just installed a legal, official version of Panther (long story as to why). Things of note:

It's 7B85. Of COURSE it is, but that had to be said.
Omniweb crashes at startup, which it did not do in dev seeds - I'll see if I can fix it - removing OmniSaft fixed it. I like OmniSaft
Expose is, alarmingly, smoother on an 800 MHz G3 with a Radeon 7500 than a 1 GHz G4 with a Radeon 8500. Both machines have the same FSB, but the G3 DOES have more RAM...
Compared to Jaguar, Toast 6 is REALLY REALLY REALLY fast (the machine I was using dev seeds on didn't have a Toast license).
If more things crop up, I will post them.

Good Grief.

Go look for a thread on "7B85 posted on ADC" if you're really not just being an ass.

did you read his intro, wise ass

"Well, I just installed a legal, official version of Panther (long story as to why)."

he did not say he got from ADC and there are people who say that the copy on ADC is not the final. So don't jump down my throat!

I'm assuming that "legal, official version of Panther" means Panther from ADC. But that's just me.

I have a special relationship with the local Apple education-sponsory people. Basically, there was a tie between myself and another student for a scholarship to WWDC; he got it, I got perks. This wasn't downloaded from the ADC.

There is, of course, no proof I can offer, but why would I be lying?

I'm afraid I don't really have any other useful information. All the threads about the various developer seeds - especially 7B85 - have covered the new stuff of Panther.

GET TO THE POINT!!!!

If there is any...

I want to hear everything there is about Panther... I have it too... But I have been to chicken to install it on my G5...

So B85 is the real deal? I got mine from friend who got it off the ADC.

But to be honest, even if it was leeched off some server I wouldn't care what people think, most people who bitch about where they got anything from are hypocrites AND would do the same...

As for me, I have bought each and every OS I have had since 7.6, so they can't say a thing about it other then free PR...

But I have not installed it on my G5 yet, is everything as good as they say it is?

I hope Adobe Reader is faster too. It makes my Dual 1.25 GHz feel like an iBook. Still, if Preview in 10.3 is as good as everybody claims it to be, I'll put Adobe Reader straight into ~/.Trash

Still can't believe Adobe releases such crap.

can i ask a silly question? This has probably maybe sort of come up before... i was just curious to those of you have used the final Panth' release....

In the finder, if your right click on a spot and select new folder, does the folder appear on that spot, or wherever it wants to due to how the finder arranges things?

One of my irritable gripes about the current release of Jag. Counter intuitive and behind the curve... (Thats all!)

It appears in that spot now. I was surprised the first time that happened.

What kind of G3 and what kind of G4? By G3 do you mean an iBook or a G3 Tower? Please be specific as to which models you are talking about. I am very interested in this. Thanks.

Why don't you just post the install CD... I don't get it... Even a screenshot of the info screen (maybe) would let us know...

who cares...

You are so very very correct. I just tried it, and it loaded in about one second instead of the usual 30! They must REALLY not care about Jaguar users.

It's black. It has a silver X on it. If you really want to see it, there are photos at Apple's website There's also a serial number on the box, but it doesn't seem to ever be required - it's probably just for retailers to keep track of stuff.

The G3 is an iBook 800 (dual USB) with 640 MB of RAM, a Radeon 7500 Mobility, and a CD burner. The G4 is a Sawtooth, upgraded to have a 1GHz processor, 440 MB of RAM, and a Radeon 8500. Both models have a 100 MHz FSB. On the iBook, Expose is perfectly and completely smooth. On the G4, there is _occasional_ tiny amounts of lag when selecting the window to switch to. It only happens if the CPU is pegged, but on the iBook Expose seems to be high enough priority that that doesn't happen.

mitchell_pgh: the about screen can be found at http://phunt.net/info.pdf
That's not going to convince you of anything, though, because it's exactly the same as the 7B85 info screen was, for obvious reasons.

Here is something I haven't seen anyone mention EVER!

If you are in column mode and click an MP3 or movie to play it in the finder, then adjust the volume, the Finder will remember that volume level for all other files you listen to in the Finder. Neat stuff.

What's up with the complaining Lyra? The original poster made a comment about Panther and you jump all over his case?

I have 7B85 installed on my Dual G5 without any problems. You're scared to install it? Are monsters going to jump out of the machine or something. As far as your rant about buying all the operating systems, big whoop dee doo, so do we all when we pay Apple $$$ for our machines.

BTW - Yes, I will be paying for the retail version of 10.3.

A point (or question?) about Acrobat:

I have been using OSX at home since the Public Beta. At that time, I was about 95% OSX and running Classic when necessary, and 5% booting into OS9 for things that weren't compatible. By the time the retail release of OSX hit the shelves, I was 99.5% OSX and .5% OS9... still occasionally running classic.

One of the upgrades... 10.1.x (?) I needed to do a clean install and I decided to leave-off OS9 alltogether and I never looked back ever since.

--- why did I tell you this ? ---

Well, I guess I've just "Gotten Used" to how frickin' slow Acrobat has been on OSX... but at my (new-ish) job... I just took-on another role/task that has me using a G4 Mac for some of my day, but since it's doing pre-press stuff... it is running OS9.

WOW! I had almost forgotten how to do things in "9"...!

But... what BLEW ME AWAY...? We constantly output our QXP files to .PDF for client approval. We generate our PDFs at 600dpi with a BOATLOAD of images and embedding all fonts. When I go to examine the PDFs after I generate them...

Acrobat launches almost INSTANTLY... and if I'm opening 4 or 5 PDFs at once... they all open-up within a COMBINED 3-seconds and are ready to view and scroll. I was floored at how fast Acrobat is in "9"... What the hell is bloating the OSX version...? Is it Adobe...? Or is it Apple...?

I never thought I'd be happy to be using OS9 for anything again (yes, I still need to re-boot at-least 4-5 times a day, apps crash constantly, I can only do one-thing-at-a-time...)

Sorry... this is more of a rhetorical posting to this topic.

I deleted reader once I got the GA of Panther... no need for it, as the damn thing took like 8 seconds to launch, compared to the 1 second of Preview.

Oh and Preview scrolls 10x faster and does a full text search 10x faster, too.

Why use Reader? Haven't missed it in 3 weeks :-)

You'll love the Preview 2.1! It is screaming fast on my 600 MHz G3 iBook!! I haven't used the bloat that is Adobe Reader for a year now and I'll admit the Jag Preview tested my nerves - it was downright slow. Panther Preview is light, easy to use, pretty and FAST.

Never again Adobe Reader.

You say theres no way to prove you have it but there is - take a photo of the back of the box, the cd next to your computer etc.

Its irrelevant whether you obtained it like you said, or downloaded it.

However, I'd like to see the first user submitted photo of the panther retail box

Man, did I get SUCKERED

Read all the way down this thread looking for info about PANTHER... apparently none exists.

There needs to be a way to change thread titles. This one needs to be:

DO WE THINK GUL BANANA'S PANTHER IS PIRATED?

In fact... we probably need to do a poll on it. Whatcha think, Gul?
(Sorry you couldn't get an actual Panther discussion going.)

Heh, sorry, I just edited that comment, as it was much too confident. I don't have Panther yet (though v85 is floating around my studio and I can check this out on Monday).

I've just heard that it's there.

These are color sync filters which you can apply to prints, such as 'sepia tone' etc. I posted some screenshots of this in one of the early 7bxx threads.

I agree. Who cares if it's official? It's Panther, I'm pretty sure. And that's all I care about until I get my (legal, box-shipping, not ADC) Panther.
