Kinda weird results on my iBook 800mhz, 512Meg

Xbench 38.31 Panther 46.92 Jag
CocoaBench 12.07 Panther 11.68 Jag
Haxial Bench 96,444 milisecs Panth 94,410 Jag

I'd be interested in seeing results on other machines.

Testing = same machine, nothing running but the finder, nothing else running.

Do some real world test not this benchmark app crap. They all have some catch like not 10.3, or G5 compatible.

Show us how you get your work done faster and we will be interested.

Well the truth is except for exposé I don't find Panther much faster. I do love exposé, but until windowshade comes out my workflow in Panther is still slower....

As much as I love Panther, I have yet to find that my apps run noticeably faster than in Jag. The finder seems to sort faster, but the heavy lifting (copying and stuff) seems about the same.

This said, I've already ordered my legal copy because I like the interface refinements (with the exception of the metal finder). But I am curious about benchmarks (real world and from benchmark progs. btw benchmark progs are just apps. And like any app it is fair game.

Here are some benchmarks I'd like to see if someone has some time.

1. Scroll a 100 page document in word.

2. Import 1000 songs in tunes.

3. Run a really long photoshop action.

4. Framerates in itunes.

How about:

1.) Boot-up time

2.) Common App Lauch time

3.) File copy times

I really don't see how Panther is going to speed up Photoshop performance... It's an OS, not a plug-in.

How about copying a 100MB file to a networked drive?

I'm a bird. I am the 1% (of pets).

When you right-click an icon to move it to the trash, does the Finder still beachball? Getting rid of that bug would be an improvement to my workflow.

It's immediate for me...

Immediate for me, too.

I haven't done any real speed tests, but every day I boot my PC and my Mac at the same time. Every single time, they both bring up their login screens within a second or two of each other. Panther, running off my Firewire drive, comes up at least 5 seconds FASTER than Jaguar did.

4. Framerates in itunes. [/B][/QUOTE]

Well I can't post a screen shot up, but I've been getting 48-56fps. Thats about 10 minutes after boot up and iTunes is the only program running.

More benchmarks on the 800mhz ibook.
Panther on one partition/ Jag on the other.

I'm really curious as to seeing how other machines stack up
Jag Startup

0
15 secs - first light
51 secs - screen turns from grey to blue
80 secs - login screen

Panther Startup

0
15 secs - first light
39 secs - screen turns grey to blue
48 secs - login screen

....................

Jag Login -> Desktop

42 secs (timed to when beachball turns to a cursor.)

Panther Login -> Desktop

11 secs (no beachball, timed to when desktop is usable)

....................

itunes visualizer framerate

Jag - 18-28 settles around 25

Panther - 11-22 settles around 17

....................

Search hardisks for file that does not exist

Jag - 16 secs

Panther - 16 secs

....................
Scroll 1578 songs in tunes

Jag - 31 secs

Panther - 37 secs

....................
Entourage Launch

Jag
1rst launch 7 bounce
2nd launch 3 bounce

startup 10 secs

Panther
1rst launch 4 bounce
2nd launch 1 bounce

....................
Search huge entourage database

Jag
1 minute 4108 records searched
2 minutes 12231 records searched

Panther

1 minute 4898 records searched
2 minutes 12408 records searched
....................
2 asides:

1. I don't notice any speed improvement in Panther, but I do like most of the interface changes.

2. Panther seems heavy on my small ibook screen while it seems fine on my be 23 inch/G5. On the small screen the metallic windows piling up on top of each other "feel" heavy where as on the big screen the windows rarely stack up so much.

panther doesnt deel much faster on my Dual 867 than 10.2.8 was. Nothing at all feels specifically faster than before, with the exception of Unreal Tournament 2003 (where im getting a 10-15 FPS increase). Start up time from the time the OS X screen comes on is much faster than jaguar (it doesnt seem to load all that crap as slowly as before). My computer still doesnt seem to like to show the gray splash screen with the apple and the rotating line thing.

Other than expose, panther doesnt feel much different than anything jaguar, and i would have trouble paying 129.99 for it (im getting it for 20 becuase my sister luckily bought a powerbook)

Did you install over Jag or start from scratch and erase your drive first?

thanks

Panther feels a ton faster on my dual 867, despite being on an older HD than 10.2 is.

10.3 is makes a G4 733, iBook 500, G4 TiPB 500MHz, and PB Ti 1GHZ all run noticeably faster. App launches, Photoshop draws, XCode vs Project Builer compiles, CD burns are all 10-20% faster. iBook is probably tyhe most dramatic improvement.

Jag vs Panther vs Mac OS 9?

In a very basic usage and If you do not need so much the improvement in Panther, Mac OS 9 is still the best for speed?

Comparing Panther to OS 9 is like comparing Windows XP to Windows 95.

It's dead Jim...

If people don't move to Panther, Apple is not the only one that loses. The user does too. If they don't recognize it, I certainly won't waste too much of my time trying to convince them otherwise.
One great improvement with Panther, that I haven't seen mentioned is how much improved Classic is. No more weird slow screen redrawing. I still sell several Classic apps and still need to support them.
OS 9 is dead, but Classic can live on inside of 10.3 and future versions.

Thank you, thank you, Steve! I'm surprised I've seen no mention before of Classic performance.

I always dread when I have to start up classic to get some old PageMaker document.

You made my day!

This is completely subjective but on both my iBook 850 (OC'd 800) and DP 1.25, an early DP of Panther was WAAAY faster and much more responsive (Snappier™ anyone?) than Jag, and Jag is pretty good, IMHO.

I'd only imagine that the GM is even more optimized.
