Hey

I need a little help to install the new OS. I need a guide line from people who have good experience in updating their systems...

I need to know a step by step process of how you do it what you leave out in the installer and if you install it as an upgrade or clean install or erase then install?

I am on a G5 and so I want to make sure that everything runs as well as it does in the current OS 10.2.7.

Do you really need the BDS or BSD or what ever system to install it if you don't install the developer disc?

This topic is for the future release of Panther... I would like to make back ups now and be ready when it arrives in the post if we are talking about an erase of the HD before installing a new OS.

I hope you understand my question...

What is the best way to install a new OS...

Thanks

there is a thread already about this. Search for 'panther' and you'll get a subject title dealing with how people plan to install.

Yes to everything but language packs, (except yours of course), irrelevant print drivers (keep GIMP print no matter what) and X11 (unless you want it). Asian fonts, etc are always a good idea.

Hi thanks for your reply, do you do a clean install or an archive and install ?

By the way, I think it is pretty lame of people saying "why don't you look in the forum for my subject and stop asking the same thing over and over again..."

Well sorry to all those who think like that, but the truth of the matter is when a person needs help and they have gone through about a good 200 posts, they ask for help. Cause in the end, we don't live on these forums and if someone can answer their cry of help, what is wrong with that? I thought that was the point in all of this...

I can't go through 1000 posts and hope I find something, I did search for Panther and nothing too useful came up so, I ask...

Get over yourself, infidel. I went to the search page and put in panther and install, subject only, less than one month old, and I got 8 thread results, 4 of which deal with what you're asking. Your momma might hold your hand, but most of us won't. Don't attack me for suggesting what you should have made the effort to do.

Hello Lyra,

Don't let a couple rude post get to ya. As you know we've got all kinds here on MacNN.

I haven't done any searching, think I'll upgrade the way I always have.

1.) Go in and backup any important files first as we all do (or should). Sometimes I miss a couple. Easy enough for me I'll just drag what I want to keep over to my second drive. Probably my entire home folder and a few applications and fonts from outside of there.

2.) Erase my primary OSX drive and do a clean install of Panther. Only thing I usually skip is all the extra languages and printer drivers.

3.) Get my internet connection and email working. Then run software update for current versions, I'm sure iTunes will pop up there.

4.) Drag my important stuff back over and install those applications I use most often.

5.) After a couple days I'll finish up by adding those applications I most certainly will have forgotten I needed.

I'm sure this doesn't help you at all but everybody probably has their own routine with upgrading.

Just remember to double and triple check for anything important on your drive before you start. Then check one more time.

Take your time and don't freak out about getting it all done at once. Though I'm sure I will.

Then just sit back and enjoy Panther. Can't wait!

Why all the negativity man. No offense of course. Where's the love!

Someone needed help and that's what the boards are here for. Yes he could have done a better search but he did at least search (so he said). Maybe he's just not that good at searching. Some people just don't get how to search for stuff. My wife is very intelligent but she couldn't find an explanation of "internet" on google.

You did do a search you said. Couldn't you have just gave him a few links? You already went through the process and did the work, so all you had to do is post them. Instead you barked out all that negativity on him.

Lets be friends.

Hi Footy

The world need more people like you out there... I sure know this place needs them badly...

I am starting to look for other places like spymac and Apples own for support.

Even when you look through all the talk about Panther, there is always some moron who start by, I don't believe you have Panther and if you do you have leeched it off some server... etc..

Who cares, all I want to know is how it works. People get discouraged talking about anything when they have to defend them selves every second. It is bitter people with very small shoes who takes the time to lash out at people and not taking the time to help others...

But from his statement you can see where what kind of social background he is coming from.

Again, I thank you for your kindness Footy, and I value your help and will do it the way, you have mentioned it on the forum.

You just helped a fellow human being, when he was in trouble. If you need any help, I am there for ya. Any questions you might have about how the G5 is or panther let me know and I will tell you or run a few tests on my machine.

At the end of the day it is much better the have made friends then make enemies...

Have a good weekend Footy...

PS. Uday's Carcass, you are a condescending little bitch, with a bitter life. Leave the real mac users to be friends and go buy a PC.
Or better yet, go fight for your country like some of us do, let's us see how well you deal with real life on the battle field...

To the rest of the good people out there, peace is what we need... War is getting too old, too much pain...

I go and stand up for you and you throw that G5 of yours up in my face! How dare you!

To bad I bought this dual 1.3 Powerlogix card last year otherwise I might be tempted enough to run out a get a new G5. I'll wait for the dual 3gig though.

Hey Footy

Well all I can say is that we are getting there very fast... And what I mean by that is, these new G5 computers are amazing in speed. Almost what we dream about after we see a cool sci-fi movie with amazing computers...

This is getting close... When you will buy your 3 Gig next year, making a home movie with special effects on that machine will look better then Jurassic Park ever did... Well with the right set of tools...

Take care friend... I'll let you know how the installation went when I get my Panther...
