I have a G4 (800+ghz one) witha 60 gig hard drive. Suddenly the amount of space available registering for the internal hard drive is dropping--drastically with no explanation! A friend wondered if I ever logged out and logged back in--that that was a good idea. I did so, and the available space on the hard drive dropped again from 28 gigs suddenly to 12. It was originally 30-something.

Does anybody have *ANY* idea what on earth is happening--YIKES!! I have been doing a lot with Final Cut Pro, if that matters--and I have it installed on my internal drive. My systrm is Jaguar.

Do I have to start from scratch and reformat my hard drive and re-install everything? Guidance gratefully received.

1. Try rebooting... This will clear out temp virtual memory files.

If that doesn't work

2. Check the system logs:

Open terminal

cd /var/log
ls -l

and see if anything is hogging disk-space...

If something named *.log bloated you roll over the logfiles with the follow command.

sudo periodic daily
(provide your admin password)

this will compress the old log files.

if you want to remove the old file:

sudo rm (name of file)

also check: /var/tmp (for bloated files)

Try omnidisksweeper.
It catalogs your HDD and gives you a great visual of what files / directories are gobbling bits.
