It was a sound that most 15" and 17" powerbooks made when Safari would acess a secure website, like banks. It sounded kinda like bacon sizzling on the stove, but at a much higher frequency.

A sound when connecting to a HTTPS site? That's about the weirdest thing I've ever heard of.

Yea I as far as I could tell, it WAS right around in there. The graphics card maybe?

Probably more likely the network card. What would graphics have to to with using a particular IP protocol?

My PB (867Mhz Titanium) sizzles when accessing software update. Maybe it's not the same sizzle we are talking about here.

I occasionally hear it also on a PB 800. I'm pretty sure its the same. I've only noticed it when browsing the net as well.

My 17" iMac makes the sizzling noise when accessing secure websites, and when using OpenGL. Did yours used to make noise when doing 3D graphics? and if so, was that fixed, too?

I would describe it as a screeching noise rather than sizzling. Anyways nice to hear it's fixed in Panther since it's somewhat annoying.

My theory it is caused by a certain kind of EF that is put off by the processor when it is doing encryption (like https sites in Safari.) The EF is picked up by the speakers and you get that odd squeally sound. I notice it in any app that uses encryption, most noticeably SSH.
I have seen similar issues on PC laptops under similar circumstances, so this isn't just an Apple/PPC thing.
That said, Panther has done nothing to reduce this on my 17" Powerbook that I have noticed. It never really bothered me before, though.

I hope it cures my infernal audio popping problems with my Quicksilver 733.
Now they drive me to utter distraction.

Hey that's awesome if Panther has someone eliminated that - my 17" AlBook's sizzle gets darned loud at times (probably when I have 30+ Camino windows open )
