I used carbon copy cloner to get a mac os x install from one comp to another. However, I went from a beige g3 to a b&w and it retained ports like the printer and modem port in the network pref pane. What can i edit/delete to make those references go away? There is a 30-60 sec delay before login where I think the OS is looking for those ports.

Try, System Prefs -> Network -> Show: -> Network Port Configurations.

Then delete the printer and modem ports.

I can see why it should work, but that's not to say it will work.

Good Luck.

Nope, I've tried that. All it does is delete the current configuration of it, but it remains as a possible port to enable/configure.

Yeah, I never understood why people used CCC to move there stuff from one machine to a newer one. I mean, I understand using it when you're setting up 100 identical G4s or whatever, but isn't it better to install fresh on a new computer, then install your apps and copy your data across? Would save on having to figure out little problems like this, right?
