i formated my fabulous, new stupid g5 because i coppied a bunch of system prefrance files over from my G4. i actaully formated it like 3 times, cause after the first time, when i logged in for the first time my hard drive was named "/". when i renamed it it would change ffrom "/" to whatever like it should, but anytime ffinder gets relaunched it goes back to having the name "/". im still having this problem. the other prroblem im having with it is that when i try to install Existensis Suitcase (a font management program), it tells me that there is already a version of it on there and asks if i would like to go ahead anyway, i say yes it almost finishes then says theres an error and closes. come to think of it, there is another problem too, and im not sure if its just cause of the bbig Hard drive or what, but when i install some things, it takes forever to install. and when i reformatted it, it took hours, i mean like 3 or 4, each time. so if anyone has any info or incite on any of this, please share. thanks.

Could be a formatting problem. I had a problem with formatting a 120GB external firewire drive with Disk Utility in 10.2 (it formatted my drive as HFS instead of HFS+ and each allocation block was 3.4MB). I have an older machine so was able to boot into OS 9 and use Drive Setup to format as HFS+.

Maybe you could yank the drive out of the G5, install it in the G4, boot into OS9 and format it with Drive Setup. I'd also recommend a restore from the CDs that came with your system rather than a new OS X installation.
