It's my understanding that the stores can do the edu discount on hardware only, not on software.

I would call your local store and ask. I think that Apple software might be another issue...

This is absolutely correct. EDU discount in brick 'n mortar Apple Stores works only on hardware, not software.

Not sure why this is the case, but it is.

However, If your University or Community College has a bookstore that sells apple products as mine does, there is a good chance that they will be selling a student version of the OS at $69.00, as mine will. This has been the way for as long as os x has been on the shelves.

The other option, of course, is to buy the "Up to date" cd of which is a fully installable os, though you must have Jag installed...

yeah, talked to a guy at the Apple Store Easton, and he said that they can only do educational discounts on hardware, not software; he seemed to think it was a problem with the way their computer billing system was set up.

Me too! It's so hard to abstain with all those cash registers going off. Oh well, saves more money for beer on the train ride home.

I just ordered Panther in the German Apple Store and got the EDU discount. Which means that I pay 99 EUR instead of 149 EUR

That's cool, man, congrats! But I was hoping to particpate with the mass buying frenzy at the SOHO store in manhattan.

That place is crazy! I saw several HUGE orders go out the door when I was there last weekend. Mulitple computers, cinema displays, etc, etc. All in single orders. These people had cartfuls of stuff.
