On my XP box, OS X classically litters files there when I access the drives. I have always had ._xxxxxx files and .DS_Store files, but don't remember seeing ._.DS_Store files until I installed Panther.
Is this a new "feature"?
EDIT:
No it seems they existed before, but why then am I only seeing them now?

This looks like someone has added a resource fork to them for whatever reason.

Just to be clear, this is my own laptop browsing my own XP box shares.
I don't remember doing anything differently, except that I'm now using Panther.

Open up one of the Panther .DS_Store files with ResEdit and see if it has anything in the resource fork.

It's not MacDrive. MacDrive has been on the machine for many moons.
Is ResEdit OS 9? I don't have OS 9/Classic installed.

You can do this from the Terminal as follows.
cd to any directory on OSX which contains a .DS_Store file. Then type: more .DS_Store/rsrc and if anything other than a new prompt gets displayed, then it has a resource fork(if it's big you can get back to the prompt by hitting q). On my 10.2.8. machine there are none.

Really? I thought I read an article on thinksecret saying that it did not dump the resource files on Windows shares anymore. If this is not the case it would be very disappointing for me. I love OS X but as I've said many times, the network admins don't appreciate these "resource" files being dumped all over their Windows server shares. Is there any way to eliminate these files? For example, if I copy a directory from OS X (jaguar now but soon to be panther )to a Windows server share, is there a script that could delete these files? This is really a pain for me at home because I have Windows 2000 server set up to store all my data files and mp3s. When I would play an mp3, it would generate the resource files. I realized that it was making resource files for each mp3 I was playing. The worst part about it was that it was not visible from OS X (at least not visible through the finder) so I did not realize until I remoted into the Windows box to check on something and noticed that I had a lot of extra files on my share. As much as I don't care for Windows, I'd wish that Apple do something to help with this problem. At a minimum, make it so that I can tell OS X that I'm copying to a Windows share so that it could strip the resource files first...maybe in a way similar to the way Entourage can be set to send email to Windows clients
