i'm having big problems with sidetrack on my sister's ibook - it's frozen the trackpad completely. i've had to restart holding down the shift key... which works fine temporarily. she needs her ibook back so need to figure out how to disable it permanently.

this is where i wish i knew as much about os x as previous versions!

thanks for your help,
Jan

1. Go to the Finder

2. Navigate to /System/Library/Extensions
(yes, OS X has extensions, but they're more stable and more rare than the Classic ones...)

3. Go down the list to SideTrack.kext. Select it (one click).

4. Open the menu item File: Get Info (or press command I)

5. Open the disclosure triangle next to Permissions.

6. Under the Owner popup, change the owner from 'system' to 'janmc' (or whatever your username is on her ibook).

7. Authenticate in the dialog that pops up.

8. With SideTrack.kext still selected, drag it to the trash (or press command-delete).

9. Restart.

(Actually, you'll also want to delete /Library/PreferencePanes/SideTrack.prefpane, but this will get rid of the destablizing extension)

Run the installer and select "uninstall".
Plato--what's a "Chickie Run"?

Thanks for the help. I contacted Basilisk by e-mail and he told me there's an uninstaller with the installer. I think I might just have to buy one of the new OSX manuals and do a bit of study though - I'm very clueless when it comes to OSX.

Thanks again
