I apologize in advance for being a little ignorant!

I download stuffit 8 .sit file....but when I try to open it from the desktop I get a
"there is no default application specified to open the document..."

I'm a new mac user...is there something I'm missing here?
cheers

Well, if you have the latest StuffIt installed, you can tell the Finder which app to use to open the file. Get Info on the file (select the file and choose Get Info from the File menu), and click on the disclosure triangle for "Open With:" In the pop-up menu, you can either select StuffIt Expander or select Other… and navigate to the app which should be somewhere in "/Applications/Utilities/."

Another possibility is that you simply don't have the latest version of StuffIt Expander. Click here to download the newest StuffIt suite.

Edit: After reading your other thread, I assume you're trying to download the latest version of StuffIt. Use the link in my post as it's for the .dmg version of the suite. You won't need to unstuff StuffIt, as it were.

The .dmg version is the plain 8.0 WITH an 8.0.1 updater. That should work for you just fine.

I can't remember what the "m" stands for, but "pkg" refers to the file being a package. Basically, opening the file should launch Installer and guide you through installing the update.

babajazz,

StuffIt 8 has a bug that destroys executables when you unstuff them with it. You need to update your StuffIt to version 8.01. Download it here.

After you installed the updated StuffIt you need to unstuff your mpkg again.

Sorry, I didn't have the time to explain this the first time.

ps:
A pkg is an install package. I think the m stands for meta. It's a package that contains/combines several other packages.
