Chicks, man. Anyway, she's on 10.2.6, and she accidentally deleted her Sys Prefs app in the apps folder. So what now? Does she have to completely reinstall the damn thing, or could I send her my sys prefs app from Jag and have her put it in the apps folder and have her repair permissions? I like the latter idea better, but I do not know if it will work. Thanks, guys.

That should work, but if it doesn't, you can always use Pacifist to rip it out of the installer package.

Good luck.

Ugh. You could just copy your SysPrefs app and give it to her, but then you'd have to make sure the permissions are correct. I hope there is a simpler way.

(sorry but when I saw the topic I couldn't help smiling )

Wait 4 days 5 hours 29 minutes... and buy and install Panther. You should be able to hold out that long without fiddling with system prefs.

Sounds like the GF needs a good spanking.

But copying your app to her machine should work.

I'll second this method, I've done it before.

This way is actually very simple.

After copying the app bundle over to her Mac, open the terminal and type

Code:
sudo chown -R root:staff /Applications/System\ Preferences.app sudo chmod -R 755 /Applications/System\ Preferences.app
Enter the p/w and the pref issue should be over.

Good luck!

That is awfully strange that your GF was able to trash System Preferences. Did she do it inside of OS 9? If not, System Preferences should be owned by system and read only by wheel and others. Unless she's unlocking, changing permissions and then trashing things with reckless abandon, I don't see how such a thing could have happened. (Btw, why is the group wheel named wheel?)

once you get this figured out you need to make sure your GF is not using an admin account.

Have a separate admin account for installing SW etc.

Shhh!

It worked, it's fixed. It was an honest mistake. By the way, she did this on her iMac. She thought it was an alias, since she categorizes all of her apps in her apps folder into subfolders, she didn't realize she left it in there. Where it should be! Ah well—all's well.

Spankin' time.

Well she F'd it up, didn't she???

I don't use an admin account for my main thing, because it is fREAKIn StupiD,

And sh!t like this happens!

Get the dum-bass hore off the admin!!!

she can still have an admin account when she needs to install crap if she cops a fit about it.

normal user for normal stuff, admin user for admin stuff.

OSXsets itup nice for you if you are SMART ENOUF to USE IT.
