System Preferences is not allowing me to configure the OSX firewall. I get the following message:

"Other firewall softweare is running on your computer. To change the Apple fiewall settings, tun off the other firewall software."

Well, to the best of my knowledge this is not true. On another drive, I've got a clean, virgin install. So, I need to know what files I need to bring over from the clean install to my operating drive in order to reset the firewall settings to their factory defaults.

Can anyone tell me what files I need to either bring over from the clean install or eliminate from my working install to reset the firewall settings?

PS: I've already copied over the /sbin/ipfw file, and that did not solve the problem.

Thanks!

You can turn the firewall off manually by going to the terminal and typing

sudo /sbin/ipfw -f flush

Enter your password when prompted. This will flush all of the firewall rules. Quit the system preferences application and relaunch it. You should be able to configure the firewall from the control panel then.

Perfect! That did it! It was also persistent through the reboot. I now have full access to the Apple firewall features.

Thank you!

If you want more features then what the system preferences offer you read the man page for ipfw. ipfw is the firewall utility that the system prefs interface with. There is a bunch of fine tuning that can be done. Just remember if you fool around with it and block all your traffic or kill the net connection you can always flush and start over. If you ever feel the itch to investigate best of luck.

And I just starting having this problem on my dual 533 when I upgraded to X.3.

I've been digging through ipfw and the man pages, but hadn't found a solution. I'll have to give this a shot this evening.
