Hi all,

At uni, there is a wireless internet network setup in the library. To use this on my powerbook, i just have to type in a proxy server into the netwrok preferences.

When I go to a website, it will ask for my username and password and it all works!

But!

When checking emails, chatting, ftp, or any internet activity that doesn't involve a web browser, it doesn't work.

It seems that the web browser is the one that asks for the username and password, but Mail, iChat and Transmit don't ask for a username, therefore they don't connect.

Is there a place that I can type in my username and password to make it apply system-wide, in all programs?

Thanks!!

You'll really need to talk to the network administrator (or read their documentation in the unlikely chance they actually have any).

It all depends on how their proxy and firewall are configured.

It sounds as though that sort of traffic is barred at the firewall, with the possible exception of traffic from the proxy server. If this is the case, you'll need to determine if the proxy allows forwarding of POP/SMTP, etc, and if so how you authenticate with it.

Possibly because the applications you mention don't have proxy support? And if they do, have you set up the proxies for them for authentication?

The reason the web works is because the proxy settings are first going to the server to gain access and allow you to pass through to view the Web pages...

Can't you set up system-wide proxy from the network panel? That way it's no one app that does it, but the system handles it?
