FYI...
Went to the local compUSA tonight on a lark. Asked for "Mac OS X" was handed a brand new black panther box.
Went up to the cashier to pay. It rang up for $1,024.03. I said huh..it should be $129. The casher went into the back, out came the manager to explain that he couldn't sell it to me (10/24/03 = $1024.03 get it).
Was totally bummed. Oh well, guess I'll have to wait until friday and the fed ex man....

I'm hoping to have Panther in my hands Thursday morning. A certain online store has told me that it shipped my copy today (Wednesday). The other part of my order arrived today and was shipped yesterday so it looks good for an early peek at Panther.
If Panther does arrive tomorrow, it would mark the first time I snagged a copy of a Mac OS before the official release date.
Looking forward to being a guinea pig!

Since mine are 2 day shipping option, I'll have to sit and wait until Friday to get mine... Oh well... I'll have all day Friday to play around with it. I'll be too busy during the weekend to do that.

i work at CompUSA and the mac rep and the Cashier are both retarded. Hate to make it sound like that, but they were. The apple rep should know that he can't sell it untill the 23rd and the Cashier should know what that means when it rings up like that. To tell you the truth that apple rep should be taken out back and shot for even showing the box...
Anyway off my soap box.

I think that should be the motto of CompUSA...
"Shop at CompUSA, where both our Mac Rep's and Cashiers are retarded!"
I've heard more stories involved with stuff like this over the years...and it's almost ALWAYS involves CompUSA in one way or another...

The sad thing is... I work there and I am saying it. Although I must admit, at my store the apple rep and the cashiers are smart and actually know things. Mostly because I trained the cashiers and I talk to the apple rep about things. So he knows things also.
I am very modest.

What's even more sad is that Apple hired these CompUSA reps instead of CompUSA, correct? That's scary.

That would be correct, apple hires the apple reps. Kinda weird hu?
You would think that they want to hire people that know things. Although if anyone lives in Chicago goto the CompUSA there and talk to Mark Austin he used to work in my store and he knows his stuff. He is easily the most knowledgeable person about apple i know.

I don't understand why their sales people are retarded! I'm sure there are a million VERY pumped pro-apple people out there that could sell.
Most of the time, at both the Apple Store and at the CompUSA, they don't know anything...
Do you know much about Unix?
NO
Do you know much about video editing?
NO
Have you played the new XYZ game?
NO
How do I make playlists in iTunes?
I DON'T KNOW...
Most of them are fools. I know they are there to sell product, but they aren't even as annoying at the Best Buy people (a good thing) but I have seen them let people walk out of the store without even telling them they need a USB cable when they are buying a printer [that doesn't come with one]

this is a sad true fact. the management just wants to make a buck, not take the time to train everyone. I feel bad for our customers that dont get the help they need because of our sales people not knowing as much as they should. I am the front end lead and i normaly have to go out and help people because either the sales people dont know, or they arent going to get a commision from it.
My tip if you ever goto CompUSA tell someone that you want to buy a computer with all the warrantes and things and they will wait on you on hands an knees, then just buy some software that you actually wanted. best way to do it.

I dont think this store had an apple rep when I went there. I just asked a guy behind the "upgrades" counter. The cashier, however, was clueless...

I applied for a job at CompUSA. I haven't been called yet and really I am not in a hurry to get it because I am already a "Toy Expert" at Toy's R Us.
Yes CompUSA is filled with greedy nerds who don't know jack about apple products and "forget" to tell you things when you buy Windows compat. stuff.
---
My roommate was pissed when he when he had to keep going back to get a compat. card. I think one of the times it went something like this.
"Why didn't you tell me this Intel wireless network pci card would not work with my college's 802.11b network?"
"Ohh I thought you said 802.11a..."

Too bad you didn't have a credit card on you...
Dunno what the policy is now but when I was working at Comp USA they had a thing where within a week of buying something if you found it somewhere else cheaper they refund you the difference plus 10%.
You could have ended up getting it for free if you were stubborn enough lol

Check Staples
They sold 10.0 a few days before it was official.

And as far as I know, Staples no longer carries the Mac OS because of this...

I'm so damn tired of you whiners complaining about paying Apple for upgrades! MS made everyone pay to go from 2k to XP! For crap's sake, $1024.03 isn't that bad when you consider over 150 NEW features! Look at expose! It's totally thie sh1t! And iChat AV? Free w/ Panther!
Apple puts a lot of work into system updates! Quit whining and pay your due!
