Hi,

I hope someone can answer my very basic queries. I have a G4 currently running OS9.2 I am keen to upgrade to X but cant seem to find basic info so my pea brain can understand!

Firstly: can i buy X upgrade and still have the 'classic' option? All my programs are x compatible except for 1 that i will have to go back and use occasionally.

Secondly: Do i have to do some horrible hardware 8gb split thingy??

Lastly: Do i have to reinstall all my programs so they are now X?

Hope someone out there can help me out
Cheers

The easiest thing to do is to just install OS X right over the top of your current setup. It will not harm you OS 9 install or applications, etc.

You can then run all your old stuff in Classic in OS X, and any new OS X compatible stuff natively in X.

You don't have to do any "8gb split thingy". It can all be on one big partition (assuming that's what you mean).

You don't have to replace any of your programs, but you might want to replace any that are OS 9 only when you can afford it. Some carbon applications (eg, recent versions of AppleWorks) work in both OS 9 and OS X. Other OS 9 applications (eg, MS Office apps) will need to be replaced with the OS X version if you don't want to run them in Classic, but natively instead.

thanks for the info.
I did mean partition (the 8gb thingy), couldnt think of the word!

Another thing…
Will my mac then boot straight into X? The program thing confuses me a little. For example I am using InDesign 2 in OS9.2 at present, obviously this is very friendly with X. Do i need to reinstall my InDesign for me to use that application in X or will it automatically switch over? Does this make sense?

I am most likely gonna ditch my old version of Quark completely, but still need to be able to access old jobs done in this program, hence the need to run classic and x.

Basically i am a scaredy cat!!

You don't have to partition your hard disk. The old beige G3s had this problem, but none of the G4s as far as I know.

You will have the choice whether your Mac boots into OS X or OS 9. And you will be able to run Classic (OS 9) within OS X.

Most of your Carbon apps should work both in OS 9 and OS X, but apps like Indesign like to install a lot of support files, so it might be that you have to do an install in OS X again. It will continue to run on OS 9.

I heard Quark Express doesn't run very well in Classic, but you can always boot back into OS 9. There's nothing really to be scared of. I'd say you should update to OS X. It's worth it.
