Is there some package sniffing application for Mac? It doesn't have to be CLI... just thought people here might know better.

We were arguing with a PC friend of mine about security of our web sites... and wondering if the passwords were sent in clear text or not... he had a cool app to look at all the random packages... but that was for PC..

so...

Yeah sure, there are a bunch. What do you want to do though? And if you're calling them packages, you should probably stay away before you get yourself in a heap of trouble. You probably don't want your privacy violated and neither does anybody else.

I believe Fink has Ethereal. TCPDump also can easily be compiled.

BTW - there are lots of legitimate uses for a packet sniffer. Especially on a problem network. If you are checking your own security then it is a must as well -- especially with wireless.

I believe ettercap has an OSX port now as well.

If you're interested in packet sniffing check out this website robertgraham.com. Tons of info about what packet sniffing is, how it works, good general info it sounds like you need.

tcpdump comes with OS X, and I have compiled Ethereal from source with no problems. Works great, and allows you to view the stream as text....
signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

For the official Apple word on the subject, see Technical Q&A QA1176: Getting a Packet Trace.
