Hi
I have just recently moved over to OS X from OpenBSD and Linux. I put x11 on my mac, but I can't figure out how to get programs to compile and work. Do I need to download a special compiler package from Apple? I don't think I have gcc installed, and I can't imagine that I would have to compile it from scratch.
Here's my problem, I download the tarballs of gqview and xmms. Both won't configure, and I can't find a compiler on my system. I think if I could get over these hurdles it would run under my x11 environment. Does anyone have any help in this matter, or a good website that everything is throughly covered on?
Thanks
Nate

In addition to the X11 download, you need the X11 SDK which was on the same webpage. You also need Apple Developer Tools from Dec 2002. These are free and also available from Apple's site. You need to become an Apple Developer Connection member (free)- the sign up on on the link above. Once these are installed, then you have the needed support libraries and compiler. The other applications in the Developer download are quite amazing and powerful- take some time to explore. The documentation is a part of the download and is extensive.
Again, it is free and is simple to install. Once you have completed the installs, the gcc compiler is ready to go. Taake a look at Fink also for both binary and source packages. Last time I updated Fink, I had someting like 2,700 sourceforge packages available.

Thanks for the links and the advice. I'm going to get those files and compile away. Thanks again.
