I am running into a problem with volume levels in 10.2. When listening to music and divx movies, some are louder than others. I have to put the volume all the way up sometimes and other times only half way up. Sometimes though... all the way up is not far enough... in iTunes I know I can adjust the volume levels of the individual files, but how can I do this with other types of files?

Is there a way to force the volume levels higher the the maximum allowed on the volume slider? Some trick in the terminal? I'd be happy to find a video player ah la quicktime that has a way to jack up the volume of a file like iTunes can... with an equalizer or something.

Thanks much

Bah, then you need some Klipsch! Get the 500 RMS Watt ProMedia 5.1 system!

I know, I have the same exact problem you are having and think its stupid that I have to turn the applications volume, system volume, and speaker volume all the way up to hear it decently.

Quicktime Player can jack up the volume, get movie properties (command + J) and there is a setting in there (sound/volume I think) that will let you pump the audio up to 200x (100x being the standard max).

It may degrade the quality of the sound, however. QT may ask to save the sound setting upon closing the movie so you only have to set it once but that may be a pro feature.

If you're watching/listening to something via QT plug-in you can hold down shift (if not shift then one of the other modifiers, I can't recall right now) and then click the volume slider to access the higher volumes.

I think he's better off with a pair of mono blocks pushing some B&W speakers.

Sweeeet... Thanks Mike that helps. Not a perfect solution... but I'm happy to have something I wish there was a volume regulator like itunes has for the whole OS.

You mean like the Master system volume that you adjust in System Preferences, or the Menu Control if that's enabled, or the Pro keyboard buttons if you have them? Am I totally misunderstanding you here?

I have a Cube with Apple Pro Speakers. After upgrading to Panther, my volume is sometimes very low, like half of the usual. Unplugging and then replugging the USB speakers always brings the volume back to normal. I don't know if this is a Panther bug or a general OSX thing, though I never noticed this in Jaguar. Anyway, give it a try. Also remember that Pro Speakers requires a USB port with extra voltage. Depending on your machine, all, or some ports support this. A USB hub will not provide sufficient voltage and the result is almost inaudible sound.

Ahh sorry... as in the sound check feature. Though it would be nice if there was a way to have a little more control over just how it corrects the volume levels.
