Got my Panther Box this morning - nice and early! Immediately upgraded!
Looks great, feels great, but i'm experienceing one snag....
After upgrading to Panther (10.3) my mail loads and begins to Index the contents of my mailboxes, at the same time it checks mail on two separate servers.
It seems this is too much for the App and it crashes.
I have found that if i quickly go to prefs and set the check mail to "manually" that the app will index the entire contents of the mailboxes and behave.
Then i can check mail manually with no problems.
BUT, not wanting to check mail manually, i set the check mail back to 5 minutes.....Mail still works fine....
Another BUT, it seems that when mail gets an urge to index the mailboxes again ( i'm not sure when it decides to do this) the app will crash again.
It seems that it cant handle the multitasking of checking mail AND indexing.
I only have 2000 messages in my inbox and less in my sent mailbox.
Any ideas???

Try the rebuild mailbox option on one of the menus.

i've done two clean installs of panther and after 3 days mail starts bugging out - stalls with a beachball when indexing my mailboxes. only a force quit will get me out. also, when i type a space, period, comma, exclamation, etc. in a new mail message doubles it automatically for no reason. top this off with ichat then going buggy with an internal error every 3 letters i type. back to 10.2 till i figure things out i guess. good thing for a firewire drive!
i repeat, this is all on a clean install of 7b85 adc seed with no third party haxies installed that have not been updated for panther.

I've had this type of problem before. Even though you did a clean install, I don't believe that means your preferences were cleared out. Try moving the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist file to your desktop (move it out of the way) and then try again. You will not lose any of your mailboxes, but may have to setup your accounts if you don't use mac.com.

Assuming you copied your home directory to the machine after the install, a "clean install" really means nothing, as the mail information (copies, preferences, etc.) is ALL stored in your home directory.

I knew this when moving my ~/Library folder back over. In the case of the iChat problem, I created a new user and tried it there. No problems. So I went back and dumped all the preferences in my admin user, everything except the application itself. The problem is still there.
I have not tried this route with mail, will do it and see what happens. If it does not, I think it is time to just do a full clean install. I hear paid ADC members are to receive their copies of Panther retail within the next 3-10 days.
