I have a Mac running Jaguar(Panther tonight ) with an external firewire drive attached. I have this Mac connected to a home network that I also have a Windows XP machine connected to.

I can’t for the life of me figure out how to see the external drive connected to my Mac, over my network, on my XP machine. All that I can see over the network is my personal home directory.

Does anyone know how I can see my external drive? I have the drive formatted in the Mac file system. So, I can’t just connect the drive directly to my XP machine. I’m now wishing I had formatted it in a file system both a Mac and Windows PC could recognize.

You can use swat (http://localhost:901) to configure the SMB (SaMBa) shares, but in doing this you will probably write over the config file that the System Preferences app writes (so you will have to add your user share manually).

I have simply enabled ignore ownership on this volume in the get info window for my external drives and the entire drive can be seen.
You may want to try placing an alias of the drive in your home directory too.

You'll need to manually edit your smb.conf file.

Here's a guide I wrote some while ago.
