the internal cd/dvd drive on my Ti400 is on the fritz. i assumed i'd be able to install panther from my external firewire cd-r/w drive. is this not possible?

i can select it as the start-up disk from system preferences, but i get a "?" at start up and then it defaults back to 10.2.8 on my internal hard drive. if i hold down option while booting, it won't show up as a boot volume.

i'll be really bummed if i have to get a new drive just to install panther. i though firewire drives were bootable. any help would be immensely appreciated.

thanks, matt

I don't know, but I installed by firewire target mode from Powerbook to another, so you can probably do it or borrow another PB.

i thought about the target disk thing, but don't have another mac on hand.

i feel like this cool black box and these install cds are mocking me for being enough of a geek for this to get me upset, but not enough of a geek to know the solution!

can anyone help?

i thought about making disk images, copying them to my iPod, then booting and installing from it. anyone know if this would work.

i'm going to go for a walk and get some lunch. remind myself that there's a big beautiful world of there and its a gorgeous day here.

The only way I can install from the external CD-RW drive is to run the Installer and click restart. Anyway of the ways you mentioned won't work for me either. I can't boot from OS 9 CDs with the drive either. I didn't think it was bootable until I found this out.
